X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) Explained - Elemental Analysis Technique
X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) is one of the most common techniques used for studying the elemental composition of different materials. In this materials characterization method the sample is irradiated with x-ray radiation, which knocks out electrons from atoms, leaving them in an excited state. During the relaxation of these atoms the excess energy is released in the form of x-ray radiation. The energy and intensity of this radiation however depends directly on the composition of the material. Therefore it is possible to study a materials composition by detecting the x-rays that come out of the sample.

Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Lecture
Portable X-Ray Fluorescence is a tool for detecting elemental composition of soil and water. This is normally a slow and expensive process, but necessary to detect heavy metals and salinity for soil research. The portable meter offers a way to measure metals and salinity in the field in less than 1 minute. The authors review the use of the meter for several applications. Dr. David Weindorf of Texas Tech University is a world-renowned expert in use of the meter and presented this lecture to faculty while visiting Dr. John Galbraith at Virginia Tech on April 12, 2017.

Fundamental XRF Principle of Operation
https://www.911metallurgist.com/equipment/xrf/ Fundamental XRF Principles of Operation: A sample is excited with an X-Ray. In the process electrons from the inner electron shells are knocked. Electrons from outer electron shells fill the resultant voids emitting a fluorescence radiation that is characteristic in its energy distribution for a particular material. In principle, this fluorescence radiation is evaluated by the detector. See some at http://tinyurl.com/pnaor4w The generation of the X-ray fluorescence radiation is shown simplified in the figure above. One electron from the K shell is knocked. The resultant void is filled by either an electron from the L shell or an electron from the M shell. In the process the Kα and Kβ radiation is generated, which is characteristic for the particular material.

Silver Roman Republic denarius x-ray fluorescence metallurgic analysis
Two perfect mint state graded silver denarii we sent to Numismatic Guarantee Corp. (NGC). We paid extra for them to do x-ray fluorescence (XRF) metallurgical analysis on both coins and put the top 3 elements on the label. One is an anonymous "after 211 BC" classic denarius from the second punic war. It almost exactly resembles the example found on Steve Brinkman's website at http://stevebrinkman.ancients.info/anonymous/#H53-2-X-17 , which was a poorer condition specimen sold by Harlan Berk. The other is a P. Maenius Antiaticus denarius from 132 B.C. Both tested at 90.0 and 90.1% silver, with traces of gold and copper and lead. This test is not invasive. But there is an alternative test known as Laser Induced ----------- (LIBS). This actually burns into the coin a bit but gets past the surface. There has already been a test done on 100 denarii from th Florence Museum that showed a .96 positive correlation between the results of XRF and LIBS. They concluded it was reasonable to rely on just XRF unless the coin was suspected or known to be merely silvered , coated, fouree.
