The 'duck curve' is solar energy's greatest challenge

03:58
Renewables require change in the energy supply chain. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Electricity is incredibly difficult to store, so grid operators have to generate it at the exact moment it is demanded. In order to do this, they create incredibly accurate models of the total electric loads, that is how much energy will be consumed on a given day. But as utilities started to produce more energy from renewable sources like solar, the models started to shift as well. California researchers discovered a peculiarity in their state’s electric load curves, that started to look more and more like a duck. And that duck shaped chart highlights the greatest challenge to solar energy growth in the US. Vox writer David Roberts has been covering the issue for a few years now. You can read some of his past explainers on the duck curve, and its solutions at the links below: https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2018/3/20/17128478/solar-duck-curve-nrel-researcher https://www.vox.com/2016/2/10/10960848/solar-energy-duck-curve https://www.vox.com/2016/4/8/11376196/california-grid-expansion https://www.vox.com/2016/2/12/10970858/flattening-duck-curve-renewable-energy And if you would like to read some of the source material used in the video above, you can check those out here: https://www.caiso.com/documents/flexibleresourceshelprenewables_fastfacts.pdf https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy16osti/65023.pdf Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. EU relaxes binding targets for renewable energy resources

02:47
The European Union on Wednesday shied away from more ambitious renewable energy goals as the bloc's sluggish economy appeared to dent its zeal in the global fight against climate change. The European Commission stepped back from proposing tougher binding renewable energy targets for the 28 member nations, instead settling for the proposed introduction of a less ambitious pan-European goal of 27 percent by 2030. There are fears the EU, long a trendsetter in climate change policies, might make it easier for the US, China and developing economies to dodge tougher action. The proposal by the European Commission, the bloc's executive arm, will shape the EU's energy and climate action policies over the coming years, but it still needs approval from EU governments and the European Parliament over the coming year. On greenhouse gas emissions, the commission called for a reduction of 40 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels instead of its existing binding target that calls for a 20 percent reduction by 2020. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso defended the package as striking the right balance between fighting climate change and making sure Europe won't fall behind economically, calling it "ambitious but realistic." "Climate action is central for the future of our planet, while a truly European energy policy is key for our competitiveness," he said. Germany, which is Europe's biggest economy, has vowed to replace nuclear power with renewable energy sources by 2022. Economy and Energy Minister Sigmar Gabriel said without the previous binding targets, Europe would never have made the progress it has, and "we should continue consistently along this road." But many less economically well-off nations had pushed the commission in the other direction as they face higher energy prices, just as those are falling in competing economies like the U.S. thanks to its shale gas boom. "When gas prices in the European Union are three or four times as high as in the United States, then this is a competitive disadvantage we can't accept and must act," Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said. The commission's proposal also includes facilitating shale gas exploration, or fracking. The technology is still in infancy in Europe amid fears of the environmental and drinking water pollution it might cause. The EU views itself as a leader in the fight against climate change. One of its main tools to keep emissions in check is its cap-and-trade system, the world's biggest, which forces utilities and big polluters to pay for their greenhouse gas emissions. But climate activists on Wednesday lambasted the EU for falling behind on some of its ambitious goals. "The January sales are on and it looks like Europe's dirty energy companies have bagged a bargain," Greenpeace EU managing director Mahi Sideridou said. "The commission's plan for 2030 is a sell-out that would knock the wind out of a booming renewables industry." Breakthrough in renewable energy - VPRO documentary

46:11
It’s not in the papers but a silent revolution is moving across the world. Renewable energy is becoming cheaper than from fossil fuels. It means that progressively the choice for wind and solar energy is no longer an ethical one but an economic one. And this will speed up the transfer to renewable energy. In countries like Brazil, Australia, Chile and parts of the United States people consider renewable energy because of financial reasons. The price of solar and wind energy will continue to drop and in more countries renewable energy will occur. A surprising newcomer on the market is Morocco, where the government expects that in 2020 more than 40 percent of the energy could come from solar energy. How Algae Could Change The Fossil Fuel Industry

05:12
Watch the next video to learn more about the science of algae fuel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExOXF1x3N1g Subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/c/seekerstories?sub_confirmation=1 Join the Seeker community! Twitter: https://twitter.com/SeekerNetwork Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Seeker-Network/872690716088418?ref=hl Instagram: http://instagram.com/seekernetwork Tumblr: http://seekernetwork.tumblr.com App - iOS http://seekernetwork.com/ios App - Android http://seekernetwork.com/android Great strides have been made in recent years towards using renewable sources of energy, like electric vehicles, solar panels, wind energy and even algae. It might seem surprising, but algae is one of the most powerful sources of energy we have access to on Earth. When dried algae is ground into a powder and refined, oil can be extracted from it. The result is nearly identical to traditional gasoline, but with far more benefits. Dave Hazlebeck, CEO of Global Algae Innovations, gave Seeker a tour of his algae farm in Kauai, Hawaii, and explained how his company is revolutionizing sustainable energy. "The fuel that we're producing is exactly the same in terms of performance as gasoline or diesel or jet, it's just a lot cleaner. I think the big difference is that [with] all the other biofuels, you're growing it and you're just getting biofuel. In this case, for every gallon of biofuel you get 10 pounds of food with it," Hazlebeck said. Hazlebeck believes his company is on the path to completely change the way we currently produce both oil and food. Not only can algae create biofuel, it can also be used to create animal feed. Currently, most animal and fish feed is made from corn or soy, which both use more water and energy to grow than algae. "There's studies that show with algae grown to replace animal feed, you could actually solve global warming to a large extent," Hazlebeck told Seeker. Algae can be used to create food for humans as well. New Wave Foods in Northern California created fake shrimp made from algae and other plants that actually looks, smells and even tastes like real shrimp. Because it's made from algae, the shrimp substitute also has the added benefit of being low in fat and extremely rich in nutrients, something that corn and soy are severely lacking. Growing algae for oil and food could also significantly reduce deforestation. According to Scientific American, the yields from algae are far more significant than crops like corn or soy. If all the fuel in the country was replaced with biofuel from corn, we would need a facility three times the size of the continental U.S. to produce it. But for algae, we would need a facility the size of Maryland. Additionally, algae can produce 40 times more food per acre than traditional crops. While showing the Seeker team around GAI's Hawaii facility, Hazlebeck explained that the algae farm is next to a power plant, which puts it in a very unique position. "[It] allows us to capture carbon dioxide and avoid that discharge and reuse it, and that prevents it from going into the atmosphere and causing global warming," he said. "If every power plant had an algae farm next to it, it could potentially solve the global warming issue entirely." The environmental benefits of algae are impressive, and because algae can grow in both freshwater and seawater, it's also very easy to produce. So, does that mean we'll all be filling our cars with algae gas at the pumps very soon? Not just yet. Hazlebeck and his team have run into a few setbacks since they began scaling up their operations. The most prohibitive issue has been the cost. When Global Algae Innovations began, a gallon of oil produced from algae was about $30 a gallon -- 10 times higher than it needs to be to work as a viable alternative to fossil fuel. But Hazlebeck and his team didn't give up, and they've continued to come up with solutions to decrease the cost. As of now, they almost have algae oil down to only $2 - $3 a gallon. Once GAI can get their algae production up to scale, Hazlebeck believes it will change the geopolitics of the world. "A lot of the reasons we have wars are because of fights over resources or the need for more resources. By creating a more equitable distribution with countries being able to make their own, it should lead to a more stable and peaceful world," he told Seeker. That's really the point of it all for Hazlebeck and GAI. They don't want to be the only company doing this; they want everyone working together because they truly believe using algae as a fuel and food source will change the world. True Pyramids Purpose Has Been Finally Discovered

12:17
Many researchers thought that the Egyptian tombs were constructed to highlight the majesty pharaohs. And that's what we studied at school. Yeah, past tense! Brace yourselves, folks, because it looks as if scientists have finally discovered the true purpose of the pyramids! It seems these unique structures might have had a function that was a far cry from burying the dead... TIMESTAMPS: How the Great Pyramid of Giza is different from any other traditional tombs 1:22 Could the ancient Egyptians have had technologies as advanced as the modern ones? 2:57 The Great Pyramid's mysteries 4:20 What about the “sarcophagi”? 6:34 “The Queen's Chamber” beneath the Great Pyramid 7:27 What was the gold capstone at the top of the Great Pyramid used for 9:46 Could ancient Egyptians us wireless energy for communication purposes? 10:45 #greatpyramid #pyramidofgiza Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - The Great Pyramid of Giza was made with over 2 million stone blocks, each weighing from 3 to 30 tons. Actually, the most gigantic ones can be as heavy as 50 tons! The base of the Great Pyramid covers an area of 592,000 square feet, and each of its sides is about 218,000 square feet in size. - If you let go of the stereotype that ancient civilizations were less developed than we are today, a question arises: could the ancient Egyptians have had technologies as advanced as the modern ones? What if their knowledge was lost only to be rediscovered centuries later? - Interestingly enough, the Egyptians also used a special material, dolomite, on the inner sides of the pyramid. This mineral is known to multiply electrical conductivity. - Modern technology still can't recreate the gypsum-based mortar that was used during the construction of the pyramids. This kind of gypsum withstands huge amounts of pressure. So this may sound bizarre, but the mortar holding them together is, in fact, stronger than the blocks of the pyramid themselves. - In 1993, an inaccessible secret room was uncovered beneath the Great Pyramid. This room, which seemed to be deliberately concealed, was dubbed “The Queen's Chamber”. In 2011, thanks to more developed technologies, it became possible to explore the room with the help of a remote camera. - At the top of the Great Pyramid of Giza, there used to be a capstone made entirely of gold. It forwarded a path to transfer negative ions (those are atoms with an electrical charge) to the ionosphere (the layer of the earth’s atmosphere that contains a ton of said atoms). And that’s how an electric current of immense power was produced! - Another weird thing you can see in such carvings is what clearly looks like a wireless antenna. Perhaps the ancient Egyptians used wireless energy for communication purposes? They very well could’ve used electricity at weaving plants to manufacture yarn. 33. Energy Resources, Renewable Energy

47:39
The Atmosphere, the Ocean and Environmental Change (GG 140) The various types of resources currently used for energy production are discussed. Energy is primarily used for heating, transportation, and generating electricity. Coal is burned largely to produce electricity and is a major contributor to air pollution with coal power plants emitting carbon dioxides and nitrous oxides. Another major resource used for energy is oil. It is projected that each country either has reached or will reach a peak oil use, after which oil use will decrease. Natural gas is now being obtained from shale using the extraction technique of fracting which is a recent discovery. Nuclear power gained popularity worldwide through the 1970s, however very few new power plants have been built in the last three decades following the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl episodes. Hydroelectric power is generated by forcing water flowing from high terrain through a turbine to produce electricity. There are many hydroelectric dams operating globally. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Non-Renewable Energy Resources | GCSE Physics | Doodle Science

01:23
Follow me!: https://twitter.com/DoodleSci Doodle Science teaches you high school physics in a less boring way in almost no time! Script: Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy resources; these are coal, oil and natural gas. They were formed from the remains of living organisms millions of years ago and they release heat energy when they are burned. This heat is used to turn water into steam, which is used to turn a turbine, which then drives a generator to generate electricity. There are downsides however, fossil fuels release sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide which lead to acid rain and an increase in global warming. Another form of non-renewable energy is Nuclear. The main nuclear fuels are uranium and plutonium. The nuclei of these large atoms are split in a process called nuclear fission to release a great deal of heat. The heat energy is again used to boil water. The kinetic energy in the expanding steam spins turbines, which then drive generators to produce electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear fuels do not produce carbon or sulphur dioxide. However, they do have the risk of a fault where large amounts of radioactive material could be released into the environment such as the disaster of Chernobyl in 1986.

U.S. Unconventional Gas Resources: A Reassessment of Supply/Demand Potential

02:01:29
The CSIS Energy and National Security Program hosts a reassessment of gas supply and demand prospects and a discussion of the path forward. More efficient drilling, new technologies, and a deeper geological understanding have not only increased access to domestic gas resources but have also allowed for the development of an updated profile of the resource itself. The rapidly evolving nature of U.S. unconventional gas development has rendered resource estimates made only a few years ago already out of date. At the same time, opportunities for new demand growth have increased. Yet challenges to realizing the full potential of this resource remain. In order to present a variety of insights into the evolving supply and demand picture, the CSIS Energy Program hosts a diverse panel of both public and private sector experts: Paula Gant, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy for Oil and Natural Gas Adam Sieminski, Administrator of the Energy Information Administration Andrew Slaughter, Vice President for Energy Research at IHS Douglas Tierney, Vice President for Business Development at Encana Mary Barcella, Director for North American Natural Gas at IHS Clay Bretches, Vice President for E&P Services and Minerals at Anadarko Frank Verrastro, Senior Vice President and the James R. Schlesinger Chair for Energy and Geopolitics, moderates.
