How is coal mined? Read Full Story: http://www.spoonfeeding.in/2013/02/how-is-coal-mined-what-is-surface.html Mining is the process of removing coal from the ground. There are two types of mining: underground mining and surface mining. When the coal seam is fewer than 125 feet under the surface, it is mined by surface mining. Coal that is deeper than 125 feet is removed from the ground by underground mining. Underground mining is used when the coal seam lies deep in the earth. In an underground mine only some of the coal is removed. The coal that remains helps support the mine roof. Underground mines look like a system of tunnels. The tunnels are used for traveling throughout the mine, moving coal from place to place and allowing air to circulate in the mine. The coal that is mined is put on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts take the coal to the surface. There are three types of underground mines: slope, drift, and shaft. When the coal seam is close to the surface but too deep to use surface mining, a slope mine can be built. In a slope mine a tunnel slants down from the surface to the coal seam. A drift mine is built when the coal seam lies in the side of a hill or mountain. Drift mines may also be built in a surface mine that has become too deep. There are many drift mines in the eastern United States. The most common type of mine in Illinois is the shaft mine. These mines may be 125 to 1,000 feet deep. A large hole, or shaft, is drilled down into the ground until it reaches the coal seam.

The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyors, jacks and shearers. - H&T

Caterpillar has extensive experience in the design of roof supports for specific mining conditions. Cat Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) roof supports allow mining of seams seams thicker than 6 meters (20 feet). Following a conventional cut with a shearer to about 3 m (9.8 ft) the roof supports move forward and allow the caving of the top coal behind the roof supports a second conveyor mounted gob-side. This special LTCC method enables increased coal reserve recovery for only an incremental additional cost. This animation shows how it works.

Underground coal mine :- Most coal seams are too deep underground for opencast mining and require underground mining, a method that currently accounts for about 60 percent of world coal production. In deep mining, the room and pillar or bord and pillar method progresses along the seam, while pillars and timber are left standing to support the mine roof. Once room and pillar mines have been developed to a stopping point (limited by geology, ventilation, or economics), a supplementary version of room and pillar mining, termed second mining or retreat mining, is commonly started. Miners remove the coal in the pillars, thereby recovering as much coal from the coal seam as possible. A work area involved in pillar extraction is called a pillar section. Modern pillar sections use remote-controlled equipment, including large hydraulic mobile roof-supports, which can prevent cave-ins until the miners and their equipment have left a work area. The mobile roof supports are similar to a large dining-room table, but with hydraulic jacks for legs. After the large pillars of coal have been mined away, the mobile roof support's legs shorten and it is withdrawn to a safe area. The mine roof typically collapses once the mobile roof supports leave an area.

Room and Pillar Mining: Modern Coal Mining at Its Best When it comes to underground mining, there are different ways to approach removing coal, depending its structure and location. At the current Carlisle Mine and developing Bulldog Mine, Sunrise Coal is using the room and pillar method. Safe, Efficient & Environmentally Friendly Room and pillar is a non-subsidence plan for a mine, preserving the precious farmland above. It is among the safest and one of the most ecologically-friendly approaches to mining coal today, creating a non-subsidence environment (no movement of land) and maintaining clean water standards. Removing Coal from the Earth As the name indicates, large pillars of coal (40 feet wide) are left standing to help support the roof of the mine—more than half of the coal remains intact as supporting pillars to maintain the integrity of the surface land. The end result is a grid of open space (rooms) cleared by a continuous miner machine and separated by pillars. Once the coal is cleared and placed on a conveyor belt to our state-of-the art surface wash plant, roof bolters enter the new area to secure the roof, inserting fully grouted 6-foot metal rods every four feet. At the wash plant, rock and debris are separated from the coal so that it can be cleansed of sulfur and other minerals in preparation for our customers. This is a short video/photo collage of pillaring in Southeastern Kentucky. This is a process of mining the coal pillars which are the primary roof support in an underground coal mine. This process is to allow you to mine the maximum amount of coal, the mine roof just behind the pillars are suppose to collapse, but due to MSHA regulation and fear of injury/death the amount of pillar to be removed is highly limited and the number of timbers/temporary roof support is increased. This often causes the weight on the pillars to ride back behind the working area creating a more dangerous situation than normal.

A silent newsreel item from 1957 about mechanised coal mining procedures at the Awaba State Coal Mine, near Newcastle in New South Wales. The item opens with shots of miners going down into, and later leaving, the mine. We see older footage of miners underground using picks and shovels to break up the coal and load it onto carts. A pit pony takes the coal away. The newsreel contrasts this with the modern methods of cutting coal from the coalface using a machine. Two miners bore a hole in the coalface and set explosives. Coal is loaded into a truck using a mechanical loader and taken to storage bins by a locomotive. A conveyor belt takes the coal from the mine to the Crusher Shed where it is transported away by truck. Coal Mining the Modern Way, Newcastle, NSW, 1957. NFSA title: 128513

HOT can help you to maximize ore reserve value basis on our operating expertise We have years of underground mine engineering and operating experience and across multiple commodities using all common mining methods. Especially, we have many successful design and operation experiences for underground coal mines those are thin coal seam, large dip angle, as well as many faultags. And most of these coal mines (thin coal seam) are designed and operated by longwall mining method (fully mechanized mining). The thin coal seam longwall method helps to satisfy the highest safety standard and more margins. ● Large dip angle, thin coal seam longwall（dip angle range: 35°-55°） ● Thin coal seam, very thin coal seam longwall（Thinnest seam range: 0.8m ~ 1.3m）
