http://www.fao.org/agriculture/dairy-gateway/dairy-home/ Ukraine represents one of the most fertile agriculture regions of the world and is traditionally a net exporter of milk and dairy products. However, as imports of dairy products have risen, exports have declined. Raising the average milk production and adhering to milk quality standards has become critically important in light of developing issues. In 2013, FAO Investment Centre and the EBRD helped form the Ukrainian Dairy Sector Working Group with the intention of addressing obstacles and transforming the sector. With the introduction of change to government legislation and the development of the investment case for industrialization, knowledge share was facilitated and farmers were able to invest in their own facilities and futures. Investment has successfully benefitted the dairy industry in Ukraine by encouraging collaboration for quality and efficiency. © FAO: http://www.fao.org Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=FAOoftheUN Follow #UNFAO on social media! * Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/UNFAO * Google+ - https://plus.google.com/+UNFAO * Instagram - https://instagram.com/unfao/ * LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/fao * Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/faoknowledge © FAO: http://www.fao.org
Washington's ambassador to Germany has issued a stark warning to German companies over a controversial pipeline that would supply Russian gas to Germany while bypassing eastern European countries. Ambassador Richard Grenell reportedly wrote to several companies involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, reminding them of US sanctions on the Russian energy sector. Grenell also criticized the project on social media. The US has long opposed Nord Stream, saying it undermines European security. Thousands living in eastern Ukraine are caught in the escalating conflict between government forces and Russian-backed separatists. With foreign retail companies, international trade going down and the devaluation of the hryvnia, the economic situation is worsening and the country is on the verge of bankruptcy. In London, we ask Dr. Mohammad Zahoor, a British businessman of Pakistani origin, who has been working and investing in Ukraine for the last four decades, whether Ukraine can still be attractive for foreign investors and what should the current government do to facilitate the country’s economic growth. On the eve of presidential elections in Ukraine, the power struggle on the Sea of Asov is coming to a head. The Sea of Asov borders both Ukraine and Russia. Both states have the right to use it. Yet Russia is setting up obstacles to shipping on the sea. What if a situation similar to that in Crimea is threatening this region? Oleksandr Oliynyk, director of the port of Mariupol, is convinced that ‘Russia wants to destabilize our region and is exerting economic pressure to acquire what it failed to get in 2014.’ The economy of Mariupol has been suffering since the start of the war in Eastern Ukraine. The amount of cargo handled by the port has plummeted. Difficulties for ports in eastern Ukrainian were exacerbated after the opening of the Kerch bridge, connecting the annexed Crimean peninsula with the Russian mainland. Freight ships with a height of more than 33 meters cannot pass under the bridge, and can no longer reach eastern Ukraine. Russian border controls and the coastguard body of the FSB, the domestic Russian secret service, make matters worse, costing money and days of waiting for the ship owners. Fewer and fewer shipping firms are willing to call at eastern Ukrainian ports. ‘Of course we’re worried about losing our jobs’ says Artjom, a docker who has been working a reduced four-day week for some time. His colleague Sergej, at the neighboring shipyard, has had his hours cut since the beginning of this year. Everyone here is feeling Russia’s increasing pressure and dominance. Many are afraid that the war could also soon reach Mariupol. The documentary accompanies people in Mariupol and Berdjansk through their daily lives, just a stone’s throw from the front line. Their livelihoods are inextricably linked with the Sea of Asov, and they are at risk of becoming embroiled in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Many have considered Ukraine the breadbasket of Europe. The black earth is very fertile, and the country is almost twice the size of Germany. So there is plenty of space for farmers to move in from western Europe, where land is not so easy to come by. German farmers are also beginning to discover Ukraine. Wheat, barley and rape seed are in demand, and global prices have shot up. A Kiev-based German consultant, who sells and rents land to German farmers, says he can now hardly keep up with the demand. Grain traders in Kiev are also profiting from the Ukrainian wheat boom. A report by Markus Reher on the German-Ukrainian wheat business.

Ukraine Today talks with Aivaras Abromavičius, Ukraine's Minister of Economic Development and Trade, to discuss the government's privatization plans. Aivaras Abromavičius: "First of all, I really believe that it should be priority No.1 for the economic bloc of the government and for the whole country for this year". (Among the most lucrative businesses are) the chemicals sector, the port infrastructure (we have a good amount of ports both on the river and the Black Sea coast) that should be interesting to foreigners, as well as electricity companies, machine building companies, a few companies in the agricultural sector that are about storage and production of alcohol spirit. These are about 22 different companies." There is no unanimous decision yet which companies would be sold this and nest year. We definitely believe that we should start with the Odesa Sea Side Port." Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree, imposing sanctions on hundreds of Ukrainian individuals and dozens of business entities. The sanction bill imposes financial restrictions on 322 Ukrainians, including President Petro Poroshenko's son and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. It also freezes the assets of hundreds of politicians and dozens of businesses owned by major Ukrainian entrepreneurs. The measures are said to be in retaliation for Kiev’s economic restrictions against Moscow. Since 2014, Ukraine has imposed sanctions against over 1200 Russian individuals and hundreds of legal entities. They include Russian officials, politicians, business leaders, and journalists. Kiev has long accused Moscow of supporting an armed uprising in the country's eastern regions. The Kremlin denies any involvement. Gold prices are slightly higher at around $1345 an ounce in early U.S. trading Thursday as the situation in Ukraine has for now changed from a serious geopolitical matter to more of a regional issue of lesser significance. Outside of geopolitics, the ECB left interest rates unchanged on Thursday, holding its nerve in the face of uncomfortably low inflation. The big market-mover will be Friday's February jobs report and traders are saying the metal will likely trade in a tight range until then. All Ukrainian top politicians finance their luxurious life from European companies and banks? European legislation contains a concept called PEP. Take Oleksandr Yanukovych. He's a junior PEP. Premier Azarov, an elderly PEP. NSC Secretary Andriy Kluyev and his brother Serhiy, two PEPs. Ukraine's entire Cabinet of Ministers, all PEPs. The Verkhovna Rada? Nothing but PEPs. And then there's the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, the ultimate PEP. Banks are supposed to figure out whether a client is a PEP or not, PEP being a new concept meaning Politically Exposed Person. Someone who is politically engaged. Under that term come all the heads of Ministries, members of the Verkhovna Rada, judges of higher courts—and, of course, their close relatives: sons, brothers, wives...and business partners. A bank that has determined that their client is a PEP is obligated to then determine the source of the money that the client is placing. If any suspicions are raised at the bank about the legitimacy of the source of this money, the bank is supposed to refuse to work with that client. That's first. Secondly, the bank should report on suspicious activities, called a Suspicious Activities Report, to the country's financial oversight agency. Now for the most interesting bit. Ukraine's officials basically don't earn much money that isn't suspicious. If the son of the president, Oleksandr Yanukovych has seen his wealth increase by 7,280% in the three years since his father took office, that's suspect. If his father suddenly lives in luxury on 136 hectares of prime real estate, that's also suspect. There are plenty of reasons to look into those European companies to which money is transferred from Ukraine and from which presidential luxuries are later paid. Only you have to prove that, in order to own Mezhyhiria, Sukholuchchia and other such estates, Yanukovych used a foreign agent to launder his money. Luckily, such a foreign agent exists. His name is Reinhard Proksch. He's a lawyer, a resident of the US and the director of several European firms that have direct links to some of Ukraine's main Eurointegrationists: Yanukovych, the Kluyev brothers, and the Azarov family. Mezhyhiria, Sukholuchchia, the helicopters, the jets—they're all connected to a single individual abroad. Lawyer Proksch in fact stands at the pinnacle of all the assets linked to Yanukovych, Azarov and the Kluyevs...and brings the entire web together. How? Reinhard Proksch runs three companies: P&A Corporation, Blythe Europe and Astute Partners. Freezing the accounts of the companies controlled by Proksch will lead to a chain reaction, because we're not talking just about the companies directly in this corrupt network. A freeze will also hit those companies to whom money was being transferred. And so poor Viktor Yanukovych might not be able to buy his next crystal chandeliers, and Party of the Regions faithful Kluyev and Azarov won't be able to pay the utility bills on their Austrian estates. We propose that EU countries, EU politicians and US politicians make use of those instruments that are already in place. All they need to do is to uphold their own laws! Laws that forbid their banks to do business with corrupt politicians. With just a little bit of political will, Europe can easily make this winter the coldest one yet for Ukraine's grandees—no matter what Russia has promised.

European markets followed Asia and the U.S. down in early trading on further concerns about the strength of the Chinese economy and growing unease over the situation in Ukraine. Mining companies were among the losers in London, as any slowdown in China pushes down the price of resources like copper and iron ore. Meanwhile the IPO of Poundland, backed by Warburg Pincus was up 18.6% by mid-morning. Germany's biggest utility E.ON warned earnings will likely fall by 14% this year. It spans over 60 countries and will cost over a trillion dollars. The plan is to make it easier for the world to trade with China, by funding roads, railways, pipelines, and other infrastructure projects in Asia and Africa. China is loaning trillions of dollars to any country that's willing to participate and it's been a big hit with the less democratic countries in the region. This makes the BRI a risky plan as well. But China is pushing forward because its goals are not strictly economic, they're also geopolitical. To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Ukraine's Petro Poroshenko admitted his defeat and congratulated Vladimir Zelensky on his victory. In a telephone conversation, Poroshenko offered Zelensky his help and kind advice, if need be. In response, Zelensky said that he was ready to invite Poroshenko to work as a minister in Ukraine's new government, "if people say that they want to see him as a minister." Vladimir Zelensky reacted calmly to his victory. After the polling stations were closed, he thanked his supporters and said that he wanted to express gratitude to his parents, his wife for their strength and endurance, as well as to all the Ukrainians who supported him. Zelensky promised that he would never let them down. Zelensky plans to pay first priority attention to building relations with Moscow. When he takes office as president, his "task number one" will be to strive for the return of Ukrainian sailors who were arrested in Russia during the Kerch Strait scandal. He also intends to start a "powerful information war" to end the conflict in the Donbass. In early April, Zelensky said that he was ready for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict in the Donbas. He said that he would not be willing to make territorial concessions because he insists on the integrity of Ukraine. Zelensky has his own plan to end the war in the Donbas, which consists of several stages. The first one is a cease-fire. In addition, he believes that the Ukrainian authorities should resume making social payments to residents of the region.
