During cataract surgery, the patient's natural lens, which has become clouded, is replaced with an artificial lens. There are several different types of artificial lenses, which leaves patients with an important decision to make prior to their surgery. With so many options, patients often have a lot of questions about the different lens types. In this episode of Ask an Ophthalmologist, Dr. Cameron Johnson from Milan Eye Center discusses the Symfony Lens and the Multifocal Lens. He answers questions about who makes a good candidate for these lens types, the pros and cons of each type of lens, and whether patients will need glasses after their cataract surgery. In this tutorial, we continue to talk about creating HTML forms, but in addition to talking about textboxes and submit buttons, this tutorial covers how to add radio buttons and checkboxes to a form. Radio buttons can be useful for when a user is only allowed to select one option from a list of items, while checkboxes can be used to allow users to select multiple (or no) items from a list of them. In order to add radio buttons and checkboxes to our webpages, we can still use the "input" tag and the "type" attribute, but instead of using a type of "text" or "password", we can use either "radio" or "checkbox" to create radio buttons or checkboxes. This episode will teach you to configure a checkbox list and basket of options for our ToDo App. It will be based on an external junction (many-to-many) table. First, we will add "Tags" and "TaskTags" tables and models. Then, we will add a "Tags" field into the tasks form. This field will first be configured as a checkbox list. We will add several records in-line. Then, we will convert the field to a basket style drop down list. Finally, we will remove the now redundant Categories table.

Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgeries done in the world and when you remove the cataract, you need to now think about what is the intraocular lens that you will get implanted after you get your cataract removed. Who is the best person to answer this question? Ofcourse, the ophthalmologist, the surgeon who is going to operate upon you. Well, in this time and age, there is a huge variety of intraocular lens and you might get yourself confused. These are small tips to help you out. You need to first decide what are your priorities. Are you really keen on getting freedom after cataract surgery form glasses completely. Are you okay with wearing reading glasses like all of us wear after 40 years, or you are in such kind of a profession where wearing glasses is a taboo. Well, if all these things are there, you need to bring out all these things in front of your ophthalmologist. Now he or she will tell you which is the best intraocular lens. It also depends upon whether you are a diabetic or whether you had any eye disease like glaucoma or uveitis in the past. There are two kinds of intraocular lens mainly. Multifocal lenses and monofocal lenses. Multifocal lenses after being implanted in both the eyes, will in 95% of the times give you freedom form glasses, both for your distance vision and for your near work. Monofocal lenses will give you good vision wither for distance or for reading. There is something like monovision. What is monovision? In this technique what we call as monovision, we implant the dominant eye for distant vision clarity and we implant them on dominate eye for near work clarity. So one eye being good for distance and the other eye being good for reading. So at the end of both the eye surgeries, you now have good vision for both distance and reading for 90% of the times. For very small font, you might still have to wear reading glasses. If you are okay with this kind of provision, you should bring this out to your ophthalmogist. Moreover there are lenses which are available which are imported lenses and there are lenses which are mad e in India. Both are equally good, but there might be difference in the cots of the intraocular lens. Your ophthalmologist or your counsellor at your eye centre will tell you what is the cost difference. It will also depends upon your costly lens of less costly lens. Depending on your budget for the cataract surgery. So yes the question was, which is the intraocular lens that is good for your eyes. The lens which is time tested, the lens which your trusted ophthalmologist confidently guides toy or your eyes would be the best for you.

In our eyes, there's nothing better than helping our patients achieve vision they never thought they could have. Dr. Robert Weinstock performed Suzanne's refractive cataract surgery, using the brand new Symfony lens. Symfony is the first of its kind, offering patients an extended depth of focus and freedom from glasses. Dr. Weinstock and The Eye institute of West Florida are proud to offer our patients the most advanced technology available to not only remove cataracts but reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses. Thank you, Suzanne, for sharing your story. Enjoy looking at your grandchildren through new eyes! Schedule your consultation today, and find out how we can help you see better.

Mark H. Blecher, MD, Co-Director of Wills Eye Hospital's Cataract and Primary Eye Care Service is one of the first surgeons in the US to implant the Symfony IOL with Extended Depth of Focus he gives us an update a couple of months later. - For more information - www.willseye.org Transcription: I am Dr. Mark Blecher Co-Director of Cataract and Primary Eye Care here at Wills Eye Hospital. I am standing outside the Cataract Clinic which is our resident Clinic also adjacent to our private cataract offices on the 12th floor of the hospital. This is where we see many of our patients as their entry point to Wills Eye Hospital. Patients who just need general eye exams and patients who have cataracts and other visual issues. We do a lot of teaching here a residents do a lot of cataract surgery under supervision and we're happy to bring them along and all the newest techniques available for cataracts. Recently I spoke to everyone about the newest technology in intraocular lenses for cataract surgery the Symphony extended range of focus lens. It was approved by the FDA at the end of August and we started using it to the last four or five weeks and I'd like to give you a little update on how that's going so far. It's going great this lens provides an extended range of focus for patients who have had cataract surgery giving them excellent distance vision right through to close vision. This is something we've never really had before prior lens technologies that attempted to do this broke the light up into two separate focal points distance and near but really there are gaps in between and the quality was not always a hundred percent. This new technology using a variant of diffractive optics gives a continuous focus of vision from distance right through close and we're seeing the patients are really enjoying a higher quality of vision and a greater facility of vision that we we're able to offer before. We are still in the early stages of using these lenses sorting out with patient we think are best suited for them which patients might not be best suited for them and how we can use these lenses with other technology that we have available to really get the best quality and function of vision for cataract patients. I will keep you posted in future updates. Thank you for attention.
