Paris-based World Federation of Exchanges, an association of 58 publicly regulated stock market exchanges around the world, recently released updated data on its monthly measure of the total market capitalization of the world's major equity markets through the end of October. It shows... the total value of world equities reached 60-point-2 trillion U.S. dollars - the highest monthly world stock market capitalization since October 2007 - several months before the global economic slowdown and financial crisis started and caused global equity values to fall by more than 50-percent and by almost 34 trillion dollars. To what can we attribute the record-high numbers and more importantly... is this healthy for the global stock market? Joining us live in the studio to give us some perspective is Dr. Kim Byoung-joo, head of KL&P Consulting and our regular commentator on this program. So, global stock market capitalization is now reaching pre-2008 financial crisis level. How should we interpret this? [ : Global Equity Market Valuation] Obviously, this is no surprise because this is something we have been anticipating as the result of the liquidity expansion in the US, the EU, Japan and elsewhere? And, stocks are not the only one that is showing the sign of bubble. Other parts of financial markets show similar signs? What is ahead now? Are we expecting market adjustment or bubble burst anytime soon? What does all that mean for Korea's stock market and also the national economy here?

China lobbies to replace Taiex with Thai bourse on board of World Federation of Exchanges

01:47
In the latest example of its ongoing attempts to diminish Taiwan''s international standing, China has intervened to remove Taiwan from the board of a multinational organization for standardizing cross-border capital flows. The Taiwan Stock Exchange was a leading member of the World Federation of Exchanges until this year, when China successfully lobbied to promote Thailand''s exchange to take its place. The World Federation of Exchanges represents 64 securities trading markets across the world, and welcomed the Taiwan Stock Exchange as a member in 1989. In 2014 Taiex was given a seat on the organization’s board of directors, but this year, it yielded its seat to a representative from the Stock Exchange of Thailand.Sun Ching-longFinancial AnalystWe’ve noticed over the past few years that exchange traded funds have experienced a renaissance across the globe, going from a trading volume of less than US$20 billion to over US$3 trillion last year. Securities exchanges have been very active these last few years in promoting ETFs, most of which require the cooperation of foreign exchanges. Of course, if Taiwan held a seat on the WEF board, it would be much easier for the country’s market to promote ETFs.The Taiex far surpasses Thailand’s exchange both in terms of trading volume and number of listed companies. But that didn’t stop China from muscling the Taiex out of its board seat. Legislators were fuming.China’s attempts to constrain Taiwan’s participation in international organizations haven’t been confined to the economic realm. Just last week, Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders Chairman Tseng Min-chieh was invited to speak at a UN-affiliated meeting on rare diseases, but was barred from the meeting at the last minute over objections from Beijing.
