One popular form of investment for rich people is buying art. But there are very few people who can afford to buy a Picasso or a Van Gogh. However, this is set to change with a novel approach on the internet. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland reports from Paris.

VIDEO: The international art market seem recession-proof, but the prices involved keep it well out of the reach of most people. That could be about to change, thanks to the launch of a new France-based service allowing clients to buy shares in a range of artworks. The Riga Stock Exchange building was built in 1852 after a design by the notable Saint Petersburg architect and academic Harald Julius van Bosse. In its time, the building, decorated with allegorical sculptures, was Riga's most ornate. Now, after the RE&RE restorers have finished their work, it can be seen in all its original glory. Authors: Janis Senbergs and Kristaps Petersons (Oobelisk, 2011).

This is my 2nd Art Exchange, with Tania Barnes. I'm enjoying this Art Exchange process tremendously, and loved doing this particular background a great deal - there's a fair bit of experimentation in here from using media I'd not tried before like the Kroma Crackle - and I LOVE the effect I got from that - to painting over some of that crackle with matt medium to seal it, and over some other arts with irridescent medium to both seal and to give a different effect to that obtained with the matt medium. This video shows how I did the background that I recently sent to Tania as part of this art exchange. I used Dylusions inks, various gels from the Galeria range, like: Large Grain Gel and Structure Gel. I also used texture paste and a smattering of stencils, some my own, some bought. Done on Canvas Board. Enjoy. I just hope Tania can think of something to do with it. And here's a link to Tania's video showing how she added her art to this to make a finished product: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAVz7zy3HhU&feature=youtu.be I love what she did to it.

This is my 6th Art Exchange, and this shows the background I've done for Shae Leigh. This is not a very complex background as no textures and not many layers are used in this one. But this is not just a vague splashing of colour nor is it a simple basis for a landscape. This is duochrome. You might have heard of monochrome where just a single colour is used with varying shades of light and dark, but duochrome allows the use of 2 colours if, for instance, you pick purple or green, or orange as I have here, or any other colour that is made from 2 other colours. I thought of this as roiling hot clouds, such as you might find in dragon's breath, or on the surface of Venus or in the cloud depths of Saturn, or in the heart of a furnace, but it can also be used as a basis for an abstract painting, or the beginning of layers of texture. Whatever Shae wants to do with it.

A COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT CITIES WITHIN THE WESTERN SOCIETY. VISIONS AND IMAGINATION. THE CONCEPT The Boston-Como project is a cultural exchange between two cities: Boston in the U.S., and Como in Italy. 34 artists, half from the States and half from Italy , work together in an art round trip. Prestigious public and private spaces in both cities host an exhibition-itinerary that will guide the audience through the streets of Como in 2013 and of Boston in 2014. The exhibition explores what are the actual strengths and homogeneity points of Western culture, ie from the block consisting of the U.S. and Europe. The invited artists are called to dialogue among themselves and with the spaces of the city in search of a line of continuity between their own two intellectual visions. The research will be based on four pillars: the historical heritage, the urban vision, the representation of contemporary man and the aesthetic dimension. Painting, sculpture, photography, but also videos, performances, site-specific interventions and interactions with the public, will create guided tours that will introduce the viewer to a deeper reflection on the Western system. THE LOGO The logo designed to represent the event Boston-Como derives from the colours and shapes of the American and Italian flags. A white star on a blue round represents the state of Massachusetts, USA, and a red round stripes wnat to looks like the american flag. The green round stripe stays for part of the italian flag, and symbolise the artistic cultural exchange between the two countries. PROJECT CURATED BY James Hull and Carolina Lio. CONCEPT AND ORGANISATION BY Fabrizio Bellanca.

Floor trading is where traders or stockbrokers meet at a specific venue referred to as a trading floor or pit to buy and sell financial instruments using open outcry method to communicate with each other. More on stock trading: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=doc06-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=3b70391c913a3a0dc8e7add5852ad72a&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=stock%20trading These venues are typically stock exchanges or futures exchanges and transactions are executed by members of such an exchange using specific language or hand signals. During the 1980s and 1990s phone and electronic trading replaced physical floor trading in most exchanges around the world. As of 2007 few exchanges still have floor trading. One example is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) which still executes a small percentage of its trades on the floor. That means that the traders actually form a group around the post on the floor of the market for the specialist, someone that works for one of the NYSE member firms and handles the stock. Just like in an auction, there are shouts coming from those that want to sell and those that want to buy. The specialist facilitates in the match and centralizing the trades. On January 24, 2007, the NYSE went from being strictly an auction market to a hybrid market that encompassed both the auction method and an electronic trading method that immediately makes the trade electronically. A small group of extremely high-priced stocks isn't on this trading system and is still auctioned on the trading floor. Even though over 82 percent of the trades take place electronically, the action on the floor of the stock exchange still has its place. While electronic trading is faster and provides for anonymity, there's more opportunity to improve the price of a share if it goes to the floor. Investors maintain the right to select the method they want to use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floor_trading On October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped 508 points, a 22.6% loss in a single day, the second-biggest one-day drop the exchange had experienced. Black Monday was followed by Terrible Tuesday, a day in which the Exchange's systems did not perform well and some people had difficulty completing their trades. Subsequently, there was another major drop for the Dow on October 13, 1989; the Mini-Crash of 1989. The crash was apparently caused by a reaction to a news story of a $6.75 billion leveraged buyout deal for UAL Corporation, the parent company of United Airlines, which broke down. When the UAL deal fell through, it helped trigger the collapse of the junk bond market causing the Dow to fall 190.58 points, or 6.91 percent. Similarly, there was a panic in the financial world during the year of 1997; the Asian Financial Crisis. Like the fall of many foreign markets, the Dow suffered a 7.18% drop in value (554.26 points) on October 27, 1997, in what later became known as the 1997 Mini-Crash but from which the DJIA recovered quickly. This was the first time that the "circuit breaker" rule had operated. On January 26, 2000, an altercation during filming of the music video for "Sleep Now in the Fire", which was directed by Michael Moore, caused the doors of the exchange to be closed and the band Rage Against the Machine to be escorted from the site by security after band members attempted to gain entry into the exchange. Trading on the exchange floor, however, continued uninterrupted. In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the NYSE was closed for 4 trading sessions, one of the longest times the NYSE was closed for more than one session; only the third time since March 1933. On May 6, 2010, the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its largest intraday percentage drop since the October 19, 1987 crash, with a 998 point loss later being called the 2010 Flash Crash (as the drop occurred in minutes before rebounding). The SEC and CFTC published a report on the event, although it did not come to a conclusion as to the cause. The regulators found no evidence that the fall was caused by erroneous ("fat finger") orders. On October 29, 2012, the stock exchange was shut down for 2 days due to Hurricane Sandy. The last time the stock exchange was closed due to weather for a full two days was on March 12 and 13 in 1888. On May 1, 2014 the stock exchange was fined $4.5 million "to settle charges it violated market rules, the Securities and Exchange Commission said Thursday." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange building in the Financial District is one of the most iconic buildings in NYC. Located at 11 Wall Street, the historical site has been closed to the public ever since September 11, with only private meetings, bell-ringing events and school field trips allowed. However, we got an exclusive look inside. Watch to see the standout, historical items from the New York Stock Exchange. Read about the secret rooms inside the New York Stock Exchange: https://www.timeout.com/newyork/blog/the-new-york-stock-exchange-is-filled-with-historic-secrets-082117 We toured the building’s many conference rooms filled with historical items, snuck a peek at the invitation-only restaurant and hidden dining room next door, and admired the architecture of the board rooms that were there when it was founded in 1792. Standout items found inside the New York Stock Exchange building include the largest Fabergé piece in the world, a Led Zeppelin guitar, Andy Warhol art, a clock from 1867 and the Buttonwood Agreement, one of the oldest historical documents in the United States found outside Washington, D.C. There’s also an autograph wall signed by bell-ringers that’s hidden inside a hallway, and a map room that’s just full of, you guessed it, maps. Below all the history-filled rooms, there’s the trading floor—that’s where the stocks are traded. There’s also the iconic bell, the most famous item in the New York Stock Exchange. Currently, 36 media outlets film shows and live-stream from the trading floor, adding to the hustle and bustle. Even if you never get the chance to go inside the New York Stock Exchange, it’s worth visiting Wall Street to see the famous Charging Bull statue. It’s found in Bowling Green in the Financial District, and earlier this year, an artist unveiled the Fearless Girl statue directly across from it. History of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Did you know? The New York Stock Exchange began in a coffee shop? find the birthplace of the New York Stock Exchange On May 17, 1792, 24 brokers gathered underneath a buttonwood tree outside of 68, Wall Street in New York City, and signed an agreement to only trade with each other. The so-called Buttonwood Agreement was the start of the New York Stock and Exchange Board (now called the New York Stock Exchange). The allied brokers soon decided they needed a place where all they conduct their business, and by early 1793 they had built the Tontine Coffee House on the corner of West and Wall Streets. The coffee house quickly became one of the busiest centers in New York City, for buying and selling stock, as well as playing host to auctions, dances, and even political rallies. By 1817 The NYSEB, had outgrown the coffee house and had to move to a bigger place. Although the Tontine itself went through a number of transformations, becoming a tavern in 1826 and a hotel in 1832, it is best remembered as the birthplace of the New York Stock Exchange. BETTINA WERNER, THE SALT QUEEN was invited by The Chief Executive Officers Club to visit the trading floor at New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, June 10, 2010 Making a mark in the history of art, is a most outstanding accomplishment, which is specially attributed to internationally acclaimed artist Bettina Werner and her unique salt arworks which she first invented and created in Italy 25 years ago. Each day, investors are treated to news about the economy and information about how the stock market has done recently. It can be very difficult to process what’s going on because at any given moment in time, there may be very little correlation between how things are going in the real world and how prices are acting on Wall Street. The noted fund manager and author Ralph Wagner once described the relationship between the economy and the stock market thusly: “There’s an excitable dog on a very long leash in New York City, darting randomly in every direction. The dog’s owner is walking from Columbus Circle, through Central Park, to the Metropolitan Museum. At any one moment, there is no predicting which way the pooch will lurch.” “But in the long run, you know he’s heading northeast at an average speed of three miles per hour. What is astonishing is that almost all of the dog watchers, big and small, seem to have their eye on the dog, and not the owner.” I use this analogy all the time to help people understand how the economy and stock market play off of each other. One of the hardest things to do as an investor is to entertain two opposing thoughts in our minds at once, and find a way to keep them despite the cognitive dissonance this can produce. One of the most ironic aspects of investing is that the greatest gains lie ahead at times when things are bad, but not quite as bad as everyone suspects, and slowly, almost imperceptibly getting better. This is the moment when assets are selling at discounted values and the opportunities are laying at our feet, there for the taking. Conversely, the worst time to invest is once everyone agrees that the environment is terrific and that the gains will continue as far as the eye can see. It is at this moment we find ourselves paying up for assets and competing with lots of other buyers. But most of the time, neither the economy nor the stock market is as good as it could get, or as bad as it could get. Typically, the economy trudges along a straight path for years at a time and it’s the stock market that is easily excitable, ripping to and fro based on the latest information to hit the tape. Over longer periods of time, we do see a correlation between stocks and the economy, but over periods of less than a year, there is literally no rhyme or reason for what has happened. All explanations are simply ex post facto; an expert grasping at straws to assemble a reasonable take on what has occurred, and why it ought to have been obvious to everyone. Understanding the economy is a helpful exercise. Placing market bets as a result of this understanding is a carnival game on the midway. » Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassic About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Cutaway crowd, pan to royal car driving away, royals wave from back STORYLINE Britain's Queen Elizabeth II opened the new London Stock Exchange on Tuesday, marking a move from its old home of more than 200 years. The new building at Paternoster Square, near St. Paul's Cathedral, does not have a trading floor, reflecting the style of trading in the electronic age. Instead, it will be used as a centre for meetings and conferences. The queen officially opened the building by switching on The Source, a commissioned artwork in the main lobby of the new building. She placed her gloved hand on an electronic ball and 729 spheres, suspended on metal cables, began to levitate. A quizzical Duke of Edinburgh looked on as the white globes rose into the air and formed seemingly random patterns the height of London's new Stock Exchange building. The Source, designed by the British artist collective, Greyworld, will mark the start and finish of each day's trading and indicate the state of the London market, whether it is up or down. Just as a famous bell is rung to commence and cease trading on New York's Wall Street, in London there are now the floating balls. The new building is a far cry from the coffee houses of 17th century London where the exchange began. It traded for more than 200 years in buildings in Old Broad Street, but after a final renovation in 1972 that location was deemed outdated. "The queen opened the former Stock Exchange Tower in 1972, and we are delighted that she has returned to open our new headquarters," said Christopher Gibson-Smith, chairman of the London Stock Exchange. "The contrast between the two buildings underlines just how much the London Stock Exchange has changed in the last 30 years," he added.
