The Big Lie of Small Business | Vusi Thembekwayo | TEDxUniversityofNamibia
A small Business can be a success, a small business doesn't have to stay small. Africa like many places is full of small businesses and struggling entrepreneurs, from small shop owners to street vendors. Vusi challenges the African business community as a whole to help grow these entrepreneurs as most businesses need capital and other forms of support from the more well established businesses and for bankers to play their part. As a continent Africa can become an economic giant of the world. Known as a "Rock star of public speaking" Vusi is the only speaker globally to have been invited to the Dragon's Den as an investor. This is because he has built several businesses. Today, as Chairman of Watermark Afrika Fund he is spearheading a pan-African process of raising the largest Growth Fund of high growth, high potential entrepreneurs in Africa. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

It’s national small business week and the BBB has some tips for business owners
IDAHO FALLS – Small businesses are the life blood of our local economy. In the cities of Idaho Falls and Ammon, there are nearly 500 small businesses. Every year, the President proclaims a week in May as Small Business Week to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of small businesses to our community, and here’s why: Small businesses in the U.S. employ nearly 50 percent of all private sector employment and make up nearly 41 percent of private sector employment. Small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy. With National Small Business Week, Better Business Bureau Northwest + Pacific (BBB NW+P) wants to recognize the accomplishments of small businesses all over eastern Idaho. “National Small Business Week is an opportunity for all of us to recognize the impact local organizations and foundations have in our communities,” said BBB NW+P President and CEO Tyler Andrew. “It’s our honor to celebrate the wins of small business owners across eastern Idaho and encourage others to do the same this week and throughout the year.” According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business and create nearly two of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. Running a small business can be tough. Most survive their first year but only about one-third survive 10 years or longer. Better Business Bureau and its partners proudly offer the following resources to help small businesses succeed: Torch Talk – online tools and resources geared to helping businesses grow and thrive. Outreach – on-site visits to participating small businesses by the BBB Marketplace team. Social Media – free giveaways and business spotlights on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. SBA Activities – free networking conference, Twitter chat and hackathon aimed at finding solutions for businesses. BBB likes to highlight outstanding entrepreneurism, small business owners and the communities who support them. To learn more on what is happening in the Treasure Valley and how to nominate a small business for the BBB Torch Awards, please visit the Small Business Resource Page. Small Business Tip Video #2 - Partnering With Your Community
Partnering with your community was developed by http://greatbusinesscontent.com. In this small business tips post, we look at how a small hospitality group collaborates with local businesses and city organizations to attract business. Starting your own small business does not require you to go solo in your marketing efforts. Todd Byhre, of Rebound Hospitality Group, believes one of the best small business tips is to coop marketing efforts, so the entire community benefits from leveraging its assets. We sat down with Todd to discuss their marketing ideas. The following video cpatures his passion for cooperative marketing. Rebound Hospitality Group owns Archer House River Inn, a 39-room hotel in the heart of Northfield. The company also operates the Bittersweet café and coffee shop, and it leases out two restaurants, a lounge, and a retail outlet. Rebound Hospitality Group has also opened hotel properties in Brainerd, Minnesota, and Decorah, Iowa. In the video, Byhre states that the mission of Rebound Hospitality Group is to find niche properties that refurbishing to become successful. The properties are too small for large hospitality groups to have interest and too big for individual investors who do not have the expertise or capital to make a renovation work. After the Archer House renovation in April of 2011, Byhre started a unique public relations campaign that did not focus solely on the Archer House. The campaign included Northfield's opportunities for small businesses, education, tourism, and restaurants. He worked closely with the downtown business association, the city's two colleges, banks, and the arts guild to form a marketing cooperative that highlighted Northfield's many assets. Hence, Todd and his marketing partners launched the campaign, Partnering with your Community-Northfield. Byhre's marketing tips for small business entails promoting a community, instead of selling a property. He views the Archer House River Inn as a small piece of the community. The marketing campaign first targets local markets, before it expands to include larger cities, such as Minneapolis-St. Paul. As Todd Byhre shows us, starting your own small business means forming relationships with community leaders and small business owners to promote a community as an entertainment and tourist destination. Small business owners can learn much from Todd Byhre's small business marketing plan. In an economic era that challenges the shrewdest small business owner, you achieve marketing success by collaborating with other local businesses and city organizations to promote the value of the community that you live and work in. We hope you enjoyed the video that has accompanied this small business tips post. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV0pFKkzApo

Small Business Revolution Documentary | The Entrepreneurial Spirit of America
During the Great Recession of 2007 and 2008, millions of jobs were shed at companies across the country. As the economy began to recover, it wasn’t the corporations or multinational companies that started to hire, it was small businesses in big and small cities alike that showed signs of life. Today, nearly a decade after the crash, the Small Business Revolution is thriving, as the entrepreneurial spirit sweeps across the country. The Small Business Revolution, brought to life by the Deluxe Corporation, is a celebration of the entrepreneurial spirit. This documentary showcases the power and joy and passion of small business owners, from a local barbershop in Chicago to a food truck in Little Rock; a pizzeria in San Francisco to a business incubator in Detroit. In developing the Small Business Revolution, Deluxe sought not to point fingers at what caused the economic meltdown, but instead to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that all small business owners exude every day. The message of the documentary is one of hope and perseverance. As one business owner notes: “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” It is true, small business is tough, yet there is joy in what is hard. Peppered with expert commentary from the likes of Robert Herjavec, celebrated entrepreneur and star of Shark Tank, Maria Contreras-Sweet, former administrator of the Small Business Administration, Melinda Emerson, the Small Biz Lady and a dozen unique small businesses from across the country, this documentary will help define the spirit and drive of small business owners as they share in their quest to capture a piece of the American Dream. #SmallBusinessRevolution #Deluxe Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://goo.gl/kVZveD Visit Here to Learn More: http://smallbusinessrevolution.org/ Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/smallbizrev Follow us on Twiiter: https://twitter.com/smbizrevolution Follow us on Instagram: http://instagram.com/smallbusinessrevolution/ Championed by Deluxe and hosted by chief brand and communications officer, Amanda Brinkman, the Small Business Revolution is a movement created to shine a spotlight on the vital impact that small businesses have on our economy, our communities and our daily lives. Independence. Originality. Belief in the bold experiment. Now more than ever, the passionate values that built America drive millions of our local businesses.

ROOG, the app that makes it easier to find and shop at community small businesses.
“Entrepreneurship can be difficult, but it doesn’t mean it should be difficult for shoppers to find your business online.” says ROOG Founder and CEO Brandon Thurman, an entrepreneurship graduate student at the McCombs School of Business. Millions of small businesses in minority (women, veterans and entrepreneurs of color) communities struggle to grow and attract online shoppers. In fact, according to U.S. government statistics, less than 8% of online sales ($1.6T) went back to minority-owned small businesses. “This means not all entrepreneurs in the U.S. have an equal chance to win in business, and that’s a problem.” says VP of Product Jesse Santana. Roog is building the technology to tackle this, and many more problems faced by community small businesses. And on March 9th, they will be speaking about their tech at SXSW. Come visit them at Titan Generator’s technology incubator at Google in Austin. If you are a small business owner, or someone who shops at small businesses, and you want to find a better way to connect, you can sign up for early access to their app at https://roog.co/ Video Produced by: Ricardo Cruz (UT Graduate) Contact: [email protected] Website: ricardocruz.squarespace.com

The UPS Store Makes 3D Printing Accessible to Start-Ups and Small Business Owners
The UPS Store today announced it is the first nationwide retailer to test 3D printing services in-store. Select UPS Store locations will be offering the services to start-ups, small businesses and retail customers, beginning in the San Diego area with locations in additional cities across the United States in the near future. A recent poll of small business owners conducted by The UPS Store showed high interest in trying the services, particularly for those needing to create prototypes, artistic renderings or promotional materials. "Start-ups, entrepreneurs and small business owners may not have the capital to purchase a 3D printer on their own, but they may have a need to show prototypes to their current and potential customers," said Michelle Van Slyke, vice president of marketing and small business solutions at The UPS Store. "By offering 3D printing capabilities in-center, we're able to help further our small business customers' opportunities for success." The UPS Store is testing the Stratasys uPrint SE Plus printer, which according to Stratasys is most well-known for its ability to print detailed objects more accurately than home 3D printers. Stratasys notes that this is particularly important when parts need to fit into each other or fit some other object. With this printer, The UPS Store locations will be equipped to produce items like engineering parts, functional prototypes, acting props, architectural models, fixtures for cameras, lights and cables. In addition, The UPS Store locations offer a range of services tailored to meet the needs of small businesses in all stages of the business lifecycle. Not only can small business owners receive well-recognized services like packing and shipping, printing, faxing, direct mail and mailbox services, but The UPS Store locations also will work with business owners to develop custom solutions to meet their unique business needs. For more information on how The UPS Store supports small businesses, visit the Small Business Solutions portal at http://smallbiz.theupsstore.com. Follow The UPS Store on Twitter at https://twitter.com/TheUPSStore, and like The UPS Store on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/theupsstore. Poll Methodology The results of the poll are based on a national online poll with small business owners. The poll was conducted with 86 small business owners between June 3 and June 17, 2013. The sample was drawn from Small Biz Buzz, The UPS Store private online community of small business owners.

#051: How To Build A Vibrant Online Community with Gina Bianchini
Welcome to episode 51 of The Blogger Genius Podcast. This week my guest is Gina Bianchini, founder and CEO of Mighty Networks, an online platform to help you build your brand in a variety of ways. Gina and I go into detail on how to build a vibrant online community, why Facebook groups are waning, and why there's real value in getting your fans to interact with each other. Resources: MiloTree Mighty Networks Teachable Kajabi Patreon CoCommercial The Happiness Project Zoom Crowdcast Catch My Party * May contain affiliate links. If you click and make a purchase, I might receive a small commission at no cost to you. Transcript: How To Build A Vibrant Online Community with Gina Bianchini Host 0:04 Welcome to the Blogger Genius Podcast brought to you by MiloTree. Here's your host, Jillian Leslie. Jillian Leslie 0:11 Hey everyone, welcome back to the Blogger Genius Podcast. I'm really excited about my guest today. Today, I am interviewing Gina Bianchini. Gina is a legend in Silicon Valley. If there is a list of female founders, she is always on it. She is the CEO of Mighty Networks. Many of you have probably heard of Mighty Networks or are using Mighty Networks. It's a place where you can build your own community. So without further ado, I bring you Gina Bianchini. Gina, welcome to the show. Gina Bianchini 0:48 Thank you for having me. Meeting Gina Bianchini of Mighty Networks Jillian Leslie 0:50 I was thinking about it and I think we met about five years ago. So we both went to the Stanford Business School at different times and there was a conference. You remember this? An entrepreneurship conference, and you were leading a session on product-market fit. Gina Bianchini 1:10 Yes, I do. Jillian Leslie 1:12 And I reached out to you afterwards and said, "Hey, we should get together." And then we met in your offices in downtown Palo Alto. Gina Bianchini 1:19 Yes. Jillian Leslie 1:20 And we sat down and we were talking about our business models and things like that. You were so kind. I remember you being like, "I totally get what you're doing. And any way I can help, I'm in." Then recently, somebody I was talking to mentioned Mighty Networks -- at the time it was called MightyBell, right? Gina Bianchini 1:41 Yes. Jillian Leslie 1:42 And I was thinking about you and I thought, "Oh my God," I wanted to reach out to you, have you as a guest on the podcast. What my audience probably doesn't know is that I think of you as one of the original "girlboss" founders in Silicon Valley. Gina Bianchini 1:59 Which makes me feel so feel old. Jillian Leslie 2:01 I don't mean it to make you feel old. Gina Bianchini 2:04 Okay, okay. I'm just going to, like, embrace it. Jillian Leslie 2:06 Embrace it because you have seen a lot and you have built businesses. Gina Bianchini 2:13 Yes. Jillian Leslie 2:15 So let's start. So can you share then your story and how you became an entrepreneur, how you founded businesses, and where you are today with Mighty Networks. Gina Bianchini 2:25 Sure. And I almost want to start with where I'm at today because I always think that that's sort of the more fun, you know spot, to begin with. What is Mighty Networks and who is it for? So Mighty Networks is a software platform. We sell it as a service, so people pay us money although we do have a free version to build brands and businesses that bring people together. So our passion is how do we enable and unlock for... We think about it as niche entrepreneurs, but it can be anybody from a small business owner to a creator to a lifestyle influencer to... actually, big brands use us as well. The really special secret sauce of a mighty network is that because you have in one place what you're probably using today as a group on a big blue platform... Jillian Leslie 3:25 It shall remain nameless. Gina Bianchini 3:27 Right. An online course on a platform like Teachable or Kajabi, an email list over here, a website over there. All the time you're spending in social media. We actually let you bring those things together. And when you bring those things together, something magical happens, namely, the thing we learned about at Stanford Business School which is called the "network effect," meaning you can create a brand or business that brings people together such that it gets more valuable to everyone with every new member who joins. That is the reason Facebook is as powerful as it is today. That's the reason we're using Skype right now for this podcast. And it's the reason that each and every one of us has the power and potential to take a small business and make it a lot bigger. Because if we bring people together in one place such that your courses, your groups, your website, your content, your events, and your messaging are all in one place under your brand, you are able to create something...

Business Vlog - Best time to start a small business is when you are Young Dumb & Broke
Here's a different view on when you should look to start a business, and its not necessarily when you are old, experienced and wealthy. What about when you are young dumb & broke? https://yourbusinesscoachingclub.com/ - Join our business coaching revolution where global business owners collaborate online for success. Stay ahead of your competitors this year by subscribing to this You Tube Channel, becoming a member of https://YourBusinessCoachingClub.com for just $15 a month or grab our Free Business Success Blueprints at https://yourbusinesscoachingclub.com/blueprint-for-business-success/ Here is a summary of my business vlog, originally published on my blog at https://yourbusinesscoachingclub.com/young-dumb-broke-perfect-time-to-start-a-business/ Let me know if you have any different ideas. Mark emailed me with a good question last week. “Craig, when is the best time to start a business? Should I get some experience working first? Do I need heaps of money?” There’s probably 3 questions there but, hey, let’s not get pedantic! Starting a business is definitely not risk free – there is absolutely no guarantee you will make more money than if you worked a job (you may even lose money!) and some businesses definitely need a fair bit of cash to get started. But my best advice to Mark is that, if you think you have it in you to be an entrepreneur, the best time to start is NOW – especially if you’re young, dumb and broke. Young because you’re more risk tolerant, have less real commitments in the world and plenty of time to recover from any failures….and you know the path to biz success is littered with disappointments don’t you. Dumb because you’re open to learning from people who have been there, done that. You know you don’t know everything and are prepared to ask and listen. We older folk (if 52 is old!) think we already know it all! Broke because you’ll be forced to start small and push hard. Online businesses are a great place to learn about marketing, product supply chains, finance, management….everything you need to be able to successfully run a large business, but can be so small that it won’t hurt you if it fails. Got a different view? I’ve posted this question into the members forum for our community to share their wisdom. Log in if you are a member. Come and join the revolution if you’re not.
