Every year, the President proclaims a week in May as Small Business Week to acknowledge and celebrate the importance of small businesses to our community, and here’s why: Small businesses in the U.S. employ nearly 50 percent of all private sector employment and make up nearly 41 percent of private sector employment. Small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy. With National Small Business Week, Better Business Bureau Northwest + Pacific (BBB NW+P) wants to recognize the accomplishments of small businesses all over eastern Idaho. “National Small Business Week is an opportunity for all of us to recognize the impact local organizations and foundations have in our communities,” said BBB NW+P President and CEO Tyler Andrew. “It’s our honor to celebrate the wins of small business owners across eastern Idaho and encourage others to do the same this week and throughout the year.” According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business and create nearly two of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. In this small business tips post, we look at how a small hospitality group collaborates with local businesses and city organizations to attract business. Starting your own small business does not require you to go solo in your marketing efforts. Todd Byhre, of Rebound Hospitality Group, believes one of the best small business tips is to coop marketing efforts, so the entire community benefits from leveraging its assets. We sat down with Todd to discuss their marketing ideas. The following video cpatures his passion for cooperative marketing. Rebound Hospitality Group owns Archer House River Inn, a 39-room hotel in the heart of Northfield. The company also operates the Bittersweet café and coffee shop, and it leases out two restaurants, a lounge, and a retail outlet. Rebound Hospitality Group has also opened hotel properties in Brainerd, Minnesota, and Decorah, Iowa. In the video, Byhre states that the mission of Rebound Hospitality Group is to find niche properties that refurbishing to become successful. The properties are too small for large hospitality groups to have interest and too big for individual investors who do not have the expertise or capital to make a renovation work. After the Archer House renovation in April of 2011, Byhre started a unique public relations campaign that did not focus solely on the Archer House. The campaign included Northfield's opportunities for small businesses, education, tourism, and restaurants. He worked closely with the downtown business association, the city's two colleges, banks, and the arts guild to form a marketing cooperative that highlighted Northfield's many assets. Hence, Todd and his marketing partners launched the campaign, Partnering with your Community-Northfield. Byhre's marketing tips for small business entails promoting a community, instead of selling a property. He views the Archer House River Inn as a small piece of the community. The marketing campaign first targets local markets, before it expands to include larger cities, such as Minneapolis-St. Paul. As Todd Byhre shows us, starting your own small business means forming relationships with community leaders and small business owners to promote a community as an entertainment and tourist destination. Small business owners can learn much from Todd Byhre's small business marketing plan. In an economic era that challenges the shrewdest small business owner, you achieve marketing success by collaborating with other local businesses and city organizations to promote the value of the community that you live and work in. The UPS Store today announced it is the first nationwide retailer to test 3D printing services in-store. Select UPS Store locations will be offering the services to start-ups, small businesses and retail customers, beginning in the San Diego area with locations in additional cities across the United States in the near future. A recent poll of small business owners conducted by The UPS Store showed high interest in trying the services, particularly for those needing to create prototypes, artistic renderings or promotional materials. "Start-ups, entrepreneurs and small business owners may not have the capital to purchase a 3D printer on their own, but they may have a need to show prototypes to their current and potential customers," said Michelle Van Slyke, vice president of marketing and small business solutions at The UPS Store. "By offering 3D printing capabilities in-center, we're able to help further our small business customers' opportunities for success." The UPS Store is testing the Stratasys uPrint SE Plus printer, which according to Stratasys is most well-known for its ability to print detailed objects more accurately than home 3D printers. Stratasys notes that this is particularly important when parts need to fit into each other or fit some other object. With this printer, The UPS Store locations will be equipped to produce items like engineering parts, functional prototypes, acting props, architectural models, fixtures for cameras, lights and cables. In addition, The UPS Store locations offer a range of services tailored to meet the needs of small businesses in all stages of the business lifecycle. Not only can small business owners receive well-recognized services like packing and shipping, printing, faxing, direct mail and mailbox services, but The UPS Store locations also will work with business owners to develop custom solutions to meet their unique business needs. I remember you being like, "I totally get what you're doing. And any way I can help, I'm in." Then recently, somebody I was talking to mentioned Mighty Networks -- at the time it was called MightyBell, right? Gina Bianchini 1:41 Yes. Jillian Leslie 1:42 And I was thinking about you and I thought, "Oh my God," I wanted to reach out to you, have you as a guest on the podcast. And I almost want to start with where I'm at today because I always think that that's sort of the more fun, you know spot, to begin with. What is Mighty Networks and who is it for? So Mighty Networks is a software platform. We sell it as a service, so people pay us money although we do have a free version to build brands and businesses that bring people together. So our passion is how do we enable and unlock for... We think about it as niche entrepreneurs, but it can be anybody from a small business owner to a creator to a lifestyle influencer to... actually, big brands use us as well. The really special secret sauce of a mighty network is that because you have in one place what you're probably using today as a group on a big blue platform... Mark emailed me with a good question last week. “Craig, when is the best time to start a business? Should I get some experience working first? Do I need heaps of money?” There’s probably 3 questions there but, hey, let’s not get pedantic! Starting a business is definitely not risk free – there is absolutely no guarantee you will make more money than if you worked a job (you may even lose money!) and some businesses definitely need a fair bit of cash to get started. But my best advice to Mark is that, if you think you have it in you to be an entrepreneur, the best time to start is NOW – especially if you’re young, dumb and broke. Young because you’re more risk tolerant, have less real commitments in the world and plenty of time to recover from any failures….and you know the path to biz success is littered with disappointments don’t you. Dumb because you’re open to learning from people who have been there, done that. You know you don’t know everything and are prepared to ask and listen. We older folk (if 52 is old!) think we already know it all! Broke because you’ll be forced to start small and push hard. Online businesses are a great place to learn about marketing, product supply chains, finance, management….everything you need to be able to successfully run a large business, but can be so small that it won’t hurt you if it fails.
