Jay Barney: Why Resource-based Theory Must Incorporate a Stakeholder Perspective
Video abstract for the Strategic Management Journal article, "Why resource‐based theory's model of profit appropriation must incorporate a stakeholder perspective" by Jay Barney. Access the full article online here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/smj.2949
http://academlib.com/3826/management/dynamic_capabilities_perspective#451 The concept of dynamic capabilities emerged in response to some key shortcomings of the resource-based view of the firm, which has been criticized for ignoring factors surrounding resource development and resource reconfiguring, instead assuming that resources simply exist.51 Based on this criticism the dynamic capabilities perspective has extended the resource-based view with the notion of evolving capabilities. In contrast, the term ordinary capability refers to those capabilities that are needed by a firm to simply conduct its normal business operations. They are the standard routines that are not necessarily unique to the individual organization—for example, the accounting system that keeps track of revenue. Ordinary capabilities are not critical for developing a competitive advantage but for transforming VRINO resources into competitive advantage. The dynamic capabilities perspective assumes that the market, the competitive environment, the technological environment, and the cultural context constantly change and more importantly, that firms that do not have the capabilities to adjust to these changes are vulnerable to failure. ...

Open Educational Resources: Challenges and Perspectives
Open Educational Resources is a concept that needs to be understood and appreciated from national perspectives and, mainly, from different structures of educational systems and strategies. Education is a deeply contextual and continuous process, so the global themes of access and openness must be studied in local implementations if they are to take root in local communities. Brazil has taken one of the leading positions in the A2K, Open Source/free Software and Open Access movements, but still has taken small steps in consolidating an Open Education Resources strategy based in a structured approach. It is also notorious that some of the projects born during the current administration are technology driven, lacking a clear position inside a contemporary tendency. And unlike Open Access, which draws on the "invisible colleges" of research in which a biologist in Brazil has much in common with a biologist in Germany, Open Education must draw on much more local culture to make learning appropriate and lifelong. There is a significant need to both identify the global aspects of the OER movement and to learn skills and strategies to localize those aspects through the creation of country and community specific implementations. Thus, in order to understand the complexity of a possible existing scenario of Open Educational Resources in Brazil and to propose recommendations, structuring the way forward, some basic research and mapping is needed.

Why Some Countries Are Poor and Others Rich
The reason why some countries are rich and others poor depends on many things, including the quality of their institutions, the culture they have, the natural resources they find and what latitude they're on. Perspectives on Motivation
Historical views on motivation are of interest for several reasons. For one thing, they provide a foundation for contemporary thinking about motivation. For another, because they generally were based on common sense and intuition, an appreciation of their strengths and weaknesses can help managers gain useful insights into employee motivation in the workplace. One of the first writers to address work motivation - over a century ago - was Frederick Taylor. Taylor developed a method for structuring jobs that he called scientific management. Scientific management is an approach to motivation that assumes that employees are motivated by money. As one basic premise of this approach, Taylor assumed that employees are economically motivated and work to earn as much money as they can. Hence, he advocated incentive pay systems. He believed that managers knew more about the jobs being performed than did workers, and he assumed that economic gain was the primary thing that motivated everyone. The human relations approach supplanted scientific management in the 1930. The human relations approach assumed that employees want to feel useful and important, that employees have strong social needs, and that these needs are more important than money in motivating employees. The human resource approach to motivation carries the concepts of needs and motivation one step farther. Whereas the human relationists believed that feelings of contribution and participation would enhance motivation, the human resource view, which began to emerge in the 1950s, assumes that the contributions themselves are valuable to both individuals and organizations. Management’s task, then, is to encourage participation and to create a work environment that makes full use of the human resources available.

Separate information by source & perspective
When writing a persuasive or argumentative piece, the writing process always begins with the collection of information on a T-Chart. Students build a list of facts, quotes, and other details in support of both sides in order to then determine the strongest position. When first pulling perspective-based information from sources, start simply. Initially, provide two texts--one text in support of each perspective. Show how all the details for one text support one side and all the details within the other text represent the other position. Compare this to the all-blue details on one side of a Rubik's Cube and the all-yellow details on the other side. A more complex scenario involves texts that include pros and cons for both perspectives. This is represented with "blue" and "yellow" details intermixed within the different passages. Consequently, students have to keep track of not only the information per source but also sort out relevant details and facts per position. This requires a more advanced T-Chart. Students must read each text and separate out the blue-perspective details from the yellow-perspective details. They also have to recognize the irrelevant information (i.e., the "red, orange, green, and white" details) that is unimportant to their task. Model how to write the titles of each source in the middle column and create rows. Then, while reading Text A, organize which details support which position from that text. Then, label the second row for Text B and again sort details per perspective. (NOTE: Some texts may have few or no facts for one side and a lot for the other.) Knowing the source of information isn't vital for the pre-writing stage, but it is for the drafting step. While composing the piece and weaving in textual evidence, students must cite the source of each fact or quote. Specifically, they must identify which text and where in the text they found the information. This requires a highly organized pre-writing process. Organizational Change: Three Perspectives from John Van Maanen
Organizational change management problems typically fall into one of three innovative perspectives: • Strategic Design – based upon the future where action comes through planning • Political – based upon the present where action comes through power • Cultural – based upon the past where action comes through habit In this webinar, recorded on February 1, 2017, MIT Sloan Executive Education Professor John Van Maanen provides an overview of each perspective. You will learn not only about the main concepts of each perspective, but also processes, the role of the leader, and stimuli and barriers to change. This understanding is critical for guiding successful organizational change. Most problems faced within an organization consist of a combination of all three – being able to see the difference enables leaders to operate effectively. If someone you love is an addict, watch this
If you love someone who is an addict, this video is important to watch and apply in supporting your loved one. This incredible father was courageous enough to tell me that he wanted his daughter to hear me speak at a recent event, but she wasn’t able to attend because she had just checked into a rehab center that morning. It’s not an easy thing to admit, that someone you love is struggling with addiction. I’m sure at some point in your life you’ve loved someone who has. I believe everything happens for a reason, and it’s not surprising that the day before I had seen this incredible TED talk by Johann Hari that fundamentally changed my thinking about how to deal with an addict you love. It’s called “Everything you know about addiction is wrong.” I’m begging you to watch it too. Maybe I’ve watched too many episodes of “Intervention”, where you’re counseled to cut people off and kick them out. But based on all the research, we know that what people who are addicts actually need is connection — not isolation. One line of the TED Talk stands out to me: “Addiction is not being able to bare being present in your life.” Johann Hari goes on to say that maybe we shouldn’t call it an addiction, but bonding. When you’re happy and healthy, you’re able to bond with the people in your life. But when you’ve experienced trauma or you’re isolated, you bond with whatever gives you relief. So when you cut people off and kick them out, the only thing they have left to bond with is their addiction. I’m not saying it’s easy to love an addict, but this perspective shift is so powerful that I want you to not only watch what I say in this video, but I want you to go watch that TED Talk, too. Let us know your thoughts or any other resources your family has found helpful. Hebron's Water Shortage from a Gender Based Perspective
Through its observation of the environmental problems suffered in Palestine, EcoPeace Middle East has found that water and sanitation is one of the most critical. Water issues in Palestine are distinctly political. The Palestinian-Israeli treaties for the allocation and utilization of water resources, have allowed water to be held hostage for decades. These agreements have not considered a just approach to equitably allocate and distribute water between the Israelis and Palestinians which lead to today’s harsh reality. EcoPeace strives through its various programs to highlight the importance of engaging men and women from different social backgrounds and age groups when it comes to planning water and sanitation projects, as well as in evaluating the policies and programs that impact their lives through impact driven policies and gender inclusion. Unified efforts can create a better reality for Palestinians and improve the water and sanitation conditions which would reflect positively on economic growth, as well as on domestic and social peace and prosperity.

Sheila Olmstead, Water Resources and Climate Change Adaptation: An Economist’s Perspective, 2015
Climate change will affect both the long-term availability and the short-term variability of water resources in many regions; these impacts are already manifest in some places, through increased frequency and magnitude of droughts and floods, duration of accumulated snowpack, changes in soil moisture and runoff. These physical impacts are uncertain, particularly at fine spatial scales, but societies’ likely behavioral responses to these shifts in hydrological regimes are even more uncertain. Ultimately, it is the combination of physical impacts and behavioral responses that will determine the economic impacts of the changing global climate. Water markets and efficient pricing could move water from low-valued to high-valued uses as the climate changes, mitigating the impacts of increased scarcity in some regions, but little is known about how well these institutions can serve this function, since water is rarely traded in markets. Olmstead draws on her own recent research and that of others to discuss the potential role of water prices and markets, infrastructure projects, and transboundary water treaties in mediating the economic impacts of the changing global climate. March 17, 2015 Sheila Olmstead is an Associate Professor, LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin and Visiting Fellow, Resources for the Future

Although Gabby grew up horseback riding and running, she found herself enjoying the party scene a little too much and losing track of her personal and professional goals. After one too many long nights, Gabby decided to commit herself to a clean and healthy lifestyle and never looked back. Gabby’s passion for optimal living eventually led her to a plant-based diet where she discovered that not only did it make her feel incredible on a daily basis, but it also allowed her to function at peak athletic performance. Over the last four years as an instructor at Barry’s Bootcamp in San Francisco, Gabby has introduced many others to a wellness-focused and plant-based lifestyle. Building a community and getting to know her clients is what means the most to her. In November of 2018 Gabby gave birth to her first child, Cooper. Although giving birth to Cooper was the single greatest joy in Gabby’s life, the reality of the recovery process dramatically changed the way she had to approach fitness and movement. Following Cooper's birth, Gabby has developed a passion for creating an open and honest dialog about the many different challenges women face postpartum but often shy away from discussing. Back to school with Theo Paphitis | Teacher Support | BBC Teach
“Looking at the bigger picture is really important.” Theo Paphitis helps a perfectionist teacher under pressure in this new short film. Talia Houri, a maths teacher and head of year 7 at Totteridge Academy in North London is a self-confessed perfectionist. She says: “That can be really exhausting because with teaching you can always do more.” “When you don't deliver something that goes perfectly well or your lesson isn't brilliant… Well for me it's really difficult. I find that really hard to not be delivering an outstanding lesson all the time.” In this short film she receives a surprise visit from business entrepreneur and owner of Ryman, Robert Dyas and Boux Avenue, Theo Paphitis. The former Dragons' Den investor is a firm supporter of teachers: “A brilliant teacher is absolutely priceless and, like many professions today, it is getting harder to keep talent due to the pressures of red tape and lack of resources. Education is so important and we must help teachers realise the good in what they do, to keep them in the profession through support and recognition." He shares advice with Thalia based on his own successful career: “Perspective is a great word. I would take a couple of seconds just to assess the thing that you're stressed about. How important is it in the overall scheme of your plan what you're trying to achieve? The likelihood is that it's minuscule and shouldn't take energy from you...” ===================== For BBC Teach Teacher Support: https://www.bbc.com/teach/teacher-support Get in touch on: TWITTER: https://twitter.com/bbc_teach FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/BBCTeach/ SUBSCRIBE TO BBC TEACH YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/bbcteach?sub_confirmation=1

Please Do Not Judge me from Your Perspective
Everyone I have come across, without exception, judges me, my decisions, my situation, my life based on their own perspective, their own abilities, their own resources, their own past, their own mental state, etc. NEVER has A SINGLE PERSON taken the time to look at my situation so that they can make an accurate assessment. Everyone simply assumes I can do what they can, or that I have the resources available to me that they have. Obviously this is not true. But despite how obvious it is, people universally ignore the obvious and persist in and insist on passing judgment on me based on their own perspective. This MUSTstop. Period.

A Parent's Perspective - Dual Enrollment for Autistic Students
Maureen Perkins worked with her autistic son to help him have a successful college transition. Here she shares some advice to parents based on her experience. More resources at www.stairwaytostem.org. She suggests dual enrollment at community college for autistic students because it gets them comfortable with college work and the college campus without diving into college right away. The student then starts college already having some college credits. In her experience it's a great bridge for the high school to college transition.
