Cultural difference in business | Valerie Hoeks | TEDxHaarlem
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. One of the elements of the cultural difference between Europe and China is the importance that is given to relationships. In the West you would assume the importance to be the same, but there is a significant distinction. In China connections with the right people help you to get things done, to survive and to succeed. Whereas in the West content is predominant, in China the way people interact with each other strongly influences the working environment. 'Face' and long-term effects are taken into consideration. Valérie Hoeks (1982) studied Sinology at the Leiden University and has been active in China for over a decade as a traveller, a student and later as an entrepreneur. As soon as she set foot on Chinese soil she knew she would come back many times. In 2010 Valérie co-founded China Inroads in collaboration with with her Dutch and Chinese business partner. China Inroads provides a strong foothold for innovative companies that want to expand their business to the Chinese market. This is where we begin so I can build the process of creating SEO optimized content focused on ranking a specific keyword. From within the keyword tool I pulled my main focus keyword and then the three supporting keywords that are most relevant to the topic. From here we go to Google and we actually leverage googles data it reveals to us on the search engine results page 2 further optimize and focus our content piece to support our main keyword phrase and the most relevant keyword phrases in Google's eyes. This is how we are able to leverage googles data and information to create the most SEO friendly content possible. At this point we have pulled all of the keyword phrases and data into a random notepad… Or Word document. The next step is to expand upon these keyword phrases so they become essentially are heading tags or H1 and H2 tags. We now organize these keyword focused headings in a logical order that would make sense to the reader who finds your content from a relevant search phrase. Then we expand upon each of these headings to come up with the main sub points that would support that heading and support the overall keyword phrase and topic of the piece. At this point you have a very simple outline that is search engine optimized for success. You simply need to add a few sentences to each sub point in order to really make this piece of content come alive. If you are new in a niche you can research each of the subpoints effectively to create the content on the fly.... If you are an expert in the niche you will simply share your thoughts your insights from your years of experience to communicate to the reader why that point is so important. When you are done you have a piece of content that is ready to be published on your SEO friendly WordPress blog. If you are making videos, you can use the same process to create outlines to get the main points you will speak about in your videos. This becomes a great tool to leverage after the video is completed so you can turn your video into and optimize blog post quickly, too. The real trick to the SEO game is to publish hundreds of these search engine optimized mega posts quickly. This is why recommend doing a 90 day challenge where you publish one post per day for 90 days. These new tools are critical to improving store efficiency and shoppability; and offer a vision of the future of retailing. Raymond R. Burke (Bloomington, IN USA) is the E.W. Kelley Professor of Business Administration at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, and founding director of the School’s Customer Interface Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility for investigating how customers interact with new retail environments and technologies. His research focuses on understanding the influence of point-of-purchase factors–including new products, product packaging, pricing, promotions, assortments, and displays–on consumer shopping behavior. Dr. Burke has served on the faculties of the Harvard Business School and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Scientists have proven that we form our first impression about someone within the first 7 seconds of meeting them, and 55% of the first impression is based on appearance. Pay attention to 12 common things you should avoid not to ruin the first impression. In his research, psychologist William F. Chaplin found that people with a weak handshake are instantly judged as being shy, anxious, uninterested, or even completely incompetent. If you place your hands on the table, don’t squeeze them too tight or lay them flat with your palms down. This makes people feel like you want to control them. Also, don’t forget about the role that culture plays here. A 2007 study showed that people who maintain eye contact during a conversation are often seen as more confident, attentive, intelligent, and trustworthy. Try not to focus the conversation only on yourself and your issues. It’s always a good idea to be attentive to your conversation partner. Tapping can indicate nervousness, irritation, or impatience. People might even think that you’re purposely trying to irritate others or draw attention to yourself. And while cracking your knuckles can help relieve stress, it’s one of the most annoying sounds according to a survey by The New York Times. A study from the University of Essex showed that even just having one’s phone on the table next to them reduces a conversation’s quality and the participants’ engagement. So leave it in your bag or in your pocket. Running late to a meeting with people you don’t know or have a formal relationship with will shed a guaranteed negative light on you. You’ll seem like an unreliable and unorganized person that doesn’t respect people enough to value their time. They include health problems, money, religion, politics, or personal problems and complaints. -When it comes to meeting someone for the first time, keep a minimum of 4 feet between the two of you. -It can be nearly impossible to control nervous tapping, but you have to try, especially during important meetings or presentations. -Even if you’re just checking the time on your screen, it comes off as extremely impolite when you do it during a conversation. -Immediately repeate someone’s name after you’ve been introduced. In case you forget the name, just play it cool and try to avoid using phrases where you have to name the other person. -Leave your house in enough time so that you don’t have to run to your meeting. You’ll be all disheveled and unfocused, and that looks bad too. -If you’re meeting somebody for the very first time, again, especially in more formal situations, try to be conservative in your choice of clothing, be polished, and don’t use heavy perfume or tons of makeup. Business English: How to Use Humor in the Workplace and across Cultures
Dr. Nara Venditti is the author of numerous articles and books on the topics available on SucceedinAmerica.com and on Amazon It's true that all cultures enjoy humor and laughter, but how people perceive humor is culture specific. With increasing cultural diversity in the workplace, we need to keep in mind that humor is meant to be funny, not insulting. What perceived as funny in one culture might not be understood or might even be insulting in another. Some cultures use sarcastic or put-down humor in conversations so as to tease each other. Other cultures do not use sarcastic humor and find this type of humor offensive. Often, in a diverse gathering an inappropriate joke may misfire. So I do not recommend poke fun at other groups and individuals in professional and business gatherings (and in personal life as well!). How to determine what kind of humor is appropriate? [pullquote] I recently met a manager who was demoted for repeatedly ridiculing an employee's accent. As you can see, sometimes "humor" is no funny business! [/pullquote] 1. If you want some fun, have it at your own expense - the safest type of humor is self-depreciating humor. 2. Do not tell jokes related to physical appearance like a person's height, weight, or the size of their nose and the like. 3. Keep in mind that humor does not translate well because very often it is based on word plays or puns, and these do not translate easily into another language. 4. Do not tell political, religious, ethnic, racial jokes other jokes that ridicule peoples' beliefs or affiliations or even accents. In one organization, I recently met a manager who was demoted for repeatedly ridiculing an employee's accent. As you can see, sometimes "humor" is no funny business! So, know what, when, where, who, and how to kid around appropriately in the workplace

The report highlights that publishers like EA, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Take-Two pay some of the largest streamers to promote their games. The report states that some of the top celebrities on Twitch, like Ninja, can earn up to $50,000 an hour from these publishers for playing their new game on streams. When these promoted streams are happening, the streamer has an “Ad Content” box and #ad in their streams. Electronic Arts Inc., Activision Blizzard Inc., Ubisoft Entertainment SA and Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. are among the publishers making hefty payouts for the real-time broadcasts, or live streams. The amounts vary depending on the popularity of the “streamer,” and could go as high as $50,000 an hour for top celebrity gamers, according to talent and marketing agents. The article also revealed that Take-Two plans to pay a large number of streamers to play Borderlands 3 upon its release this September. This step towards using Twitch streamers as a promotional tool is becoming very effective for publishers, as large amount of fans will be wanting to try what their favorite streamers are playing. Apex Legends was one of the games that seemed to effectively utilize this strategy as part of their launch, paying many, many streamers to play the title as part of the launch week for the game. One report stated the EA paid Ninja $1 million to play Apex Legends during its launch window. Coveted live-streamers, those who attract at least 15,000 viewers at once, can command between $25,000 and $35,000 an hour during a big launch, with the most popular ones earning more, according to Reed Duchscher, chief executive of Night Media Inc., a management firm that represents streamers and other online personalities. Activision Publishing has also gotten on with this new trend. How Global Manufacturers Scale Offline Sales Tactics Using Digital Marketing
Danny got to nerd out quite a bit this week! As a newly-licensed pilot, he was more than ready to talk shop with Eric Rojek: Vice President of Thrush Aircraft, Inc. 1. A UNIQUE MANUFACTURING PROCESS “Thrush Aircraft is one of the worldwide leaders of manufacturing agricultural aircraft,” Eric explained to us. “So one of the cool things that we do here is, not only do we build aircraft, but we’re part of a bigger purpose. “Our aircraft help feed the world.” “The big thing really unique about Thrush is we have full manufacturing capabilities in-house. We literally take raw material in one door, weld it, fabricate it, form it, and produce the Thrush line out the back.” From machining to fiberglass to electrical wiring to painting to riveting, Thrush really does do it all. Every airplane they create is – indeed, it must be – hand-made, and high in quality. To Eric, having control over every stage of production is vital. The two most important things that Thrush strives to get right are their people, and their product. Skilled manufacturers making something high-in-quality are vital to the sales process down the road. 2. SELLING THROUGH SUPPORT & TRAINING Thrush may use plenty of digital marketing tactics, but for them providing a hands-on experience is often what finalizes a buyer’s decision. “We do a lot of training classes free of charge. Training’s one of the best sales tools you can have!” Free education can often be an invaluable marketing tactic. Why? Well, it’s a simple matter of mathematics. If you offer a certain number of classes to a certain number of parties, how many classes do you have to give before you make a sale? In Thrush’s case, the revenue from a single sale is definitely worth the expense of a few training sessions. And one of their other major ‘marketing’ tactics…doesn’t really have a whole lot to do with marketing. For Thrush, providing proper support to existing buyers is equally as important as creating new campaigns to promote whatever they’ve created. A happy customer is a loyal customer…and frankly, snazzy marketing isn’t usually what’s going to bring someone back for more. “The sales guy sells the first airplane. The support guy sells the next three.” 3.ESTABLISHING LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE IN FOREIGN MARKETS Thrush uses a hybrid approach of direct-to-user marketing and distributors to sell their product. It’s an especially important adaptation for their company, given that 70% of their current business is international. Selling to foreign markets involves dozens of hurdles. Thrush has to be aware of customs, civil authorities, and differing federal or regional regulations. And if your company’s best sales tactic requires an in-person demonstration, then it’s wise to have local representatives when expanding into a foreign country. That’s why one of Thrush’s first priorities when expanding into a new area is to establish a presence on the ground wherever they’re selling. “Really, to have the local presence is one of the things that we really nail that has really spurred a lot of our growth and success.” By using digital marketing techniques and tools to identify their buyer personas in each market, Thrush can identify where they should offer training sessions next. Over time, this means they can scale offline sales tactics more successfully. 4. VARIED LANGUAGE IN MESSAGING Of course, even with local teams on the ground, creating multicultural marketing messages is a major challenge. “When you come up with campaigns, you have to think, ‘How does that translate into multiple different languages and multiple different cultures?’ And each market’s different. Each customer’s different.” As Danny discussed with Joanne Sanders of the Georgia World Trade Center on an earlier episode, accidental oversights in international marketing can have devastating consequences on corporate brands. In fact, sometimes messages can get ‘lost in translation’ without changing languages at all! Thrush has to make sure that their campaigns use different dialects just based on whether someone is a new prospect or a previous buyer. Familiar clients may understand plenty of Thrush terminology and company jargon that just confuses newcomers. “[If I use] the lingo we use with a mature customer, these emerging market individuals will say, ‘Eric, what are you talking about? Slow down for me a little bit!’ ” In the end, Thrush Aircraft’s marketing success comes down to knowing their buyers well. Can you handle the pressure, or will you fail miserably in a big bankruptcy? As the owner and manager you have a lot of responsibilities on a daily basis. You must: Choose the direction of your store Should it be a Shoe Store for the fashionable type, an Electronics Store for your everyday needs, or a giant Hypermarket that sells a bit of everything? Not everything will work. Trying to sell high-fashion, high-priced items in the poor part of town will not generate endless queues at your register. Will you try to dominate a competitive market, or go in an unexplored direction. Control the article flow For an article to be taken home by a customer, a lot of things must be taken care of. First you must select and order the articles. For a delivery to take place, the storage space must be able to receive and handle the delivered articles. The sales area must have the right displays and registers to showcase and sell the articles. Building a good relationship with your suppliers is key to be able to sell their more exclusive items. Oh, and by the way, which article should be the first for your customers to see when they enter your store? The bulk selling jeans, or the hyped silk shirt? Get people inside your store Build your reputation among your customers, and make your store the most sought after in town. A good marketing scheme, along with happy customers will work wonders for your income. But don't oversell your idea. If you can't keep what you promise, the customers will leave the store dissatisfied, and nothing ruins a store quicker than unhappy customers. Please the customer Create an enjoyable atmosphere for your customers to shop in, and theme your store, so they will know it is YOUR store they have entered. Make sure they receive the help they need, and that the lines for the registers don't grow too long. Manage the in-store marketing, so that both the fashionistas and the discount-hunters knows where to go, and which article to pick. Manage your personnel When you have too much on your plate to handle yourself, it might be the time for you to get some staff. Find interesting candidates among the applications. Conduct interviews, get a feel for the person, and decide if they match the role you need taken care of. Negotiate their salary and hire them. Keep them happy, and make sure they are not overworked. A great working climate gives great dedication. But you still need to sort the slackers from the workers. Invest time in the right persons, and train them to become better so when you need a stand-in for yourself, when you move to the next store, you can pick from your own home-grown talents. Optimize the store The difference between a good store and a great store lies in the detail. Weed out the poor selling articles, and get more of the good ones. Make sure you don't order unnecessarily many articles, but still enough that you don't run out. Optimize the prizes to increase the income. Find the customer patterns and adjust the opening hours accordingly. Plan an efficient staff schedule, so you don't pay people for doing nothing. Prepare for big events Is a VIP coming? Christmas soon? Black Friday? Can you spot the next big trend before anyone else? Adjust your actions according to the events occurring in a dynamic city that changes day by day. All of this is is just an ordinary day as a store owner. Are you ready to take on the challenge?
