South Korea pushes to foster homegrown, mega-sized Investment Banks

02:16
'한국판 골드만삭스', 증권사 초대형IB 탄생 Five brokerage firms in Korea have been given the green light to operate as investment banks,... after a years-long push to foster the country's own home-grown,... mega-sized Investment Banks modeled after Goldman Sachs. Of the five,... Korea Investment and Securities was the only firm permitted to issue short-term financing,... a key part of the investment banking business. Won Jung-hwan has the details. The Financial Services Commission, the country's top financial regulator, issued a license Monday to Korea Investment and Securities... allowing it to issue promissory notes and short-term corporate financing. There are four other securities firms -- Mirae Asset Daewoo, NH Investment and Securities, KB Securities, and Samsung Securities -- that are also expected to get the go-ahead in the near future. The preparations to nurture giant investment banks in Korea started back in 2011 with a regulatory roadmap to creating a so-called Korean version of Goldman Sachs. But local securities firms didn't yet have the capital. So last year, the financial authorities announced a plan to permit securities firms... that met a threshold of at least 3.6 billion U.S. dollars of equity capital to go into short-term corporate lending. Those with 7.2 billon dollars or more would be allowed to launch management accounts for corporate investors. Those changes put the big five securities companies on their way to becoming homegrown giant investment banks, and with Monday's decision, the first one now has the right to issue notes. But the traditional banking sector wants the decision to be put on hold as it could disrupt the corporate finance industry. The Korean Federation of Banks said the local securities industry lacks an oversight system to manage the issuance of such notes. Short-term corporate financing has traditionally been the province of commercial banks, which are subject to stricter rules and capital requirements. So there is some concern that the creation homegrown, mega-sized investment banks in Korea could destabilize the industry, especially amid a lack of regulation. Won Jung-hwan, Arirang News. Heated exchange as CEO of investment bank testifies, protest

03:00
(28 Apr 2010) TRUE DATE CREATED = 28-04-2010 1. Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein being sworn in for testimony at a Capitol Hill hearing, push in to Senator Carl Levin 2. Wide shot of Senate panel 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman Sachs CEO: "The people who were coming to us for risk in the housing market wanted to have a security that gave them exposure to the housing market, and that''s what they got. The unfortunate thing, and it''s unfortunate but it doesn''t, is that the housing market went south very quickly after some of these securities, not all of them because some of them were done early, but they went. And so people lost money in it, but the security itself delivered the specific exposure that the client wanted to have." 4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Senator Carl Levin, Subcommittee Chairman of Homeland Security Committee: "You don''t believe it''s relevant to a customer of yours that you are selling a security to that you are betting against that same security. You just don''t think it''s relevant and needs to be disclosed. Is that the bottom line?" 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman Sachs CEO: "Yes, and the people who are selling it in our firm wouldn''t even know what the firm''s position is." 6. Blankfein sitting before Senate panel 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Senator Carl Levin, Subcommittee Chairman of Homeland Security Committee: "You are taking a position against the very security that you are selling and you are not troubled?" Blankfein: "Senator, again." Levin: "And you want people to believe to trust you?" Blankfein: "Senator I think people do trust us." Levin: "Why, I wouldn''t trust you. If you came to me and wanted to sell me securities and you didn''t tell me that you have a bet against that same security, you don''t think that affects my thinking?" 8. Wide shot of protesters in prison uniforms with Goldman officials'' names around their necks 9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Senator Claire McCaksill, Homeland Security Committee: ++starts on pan of witnesses++ "We have spent a lot of time going through all these documents, and let me just explain in very simple terms what synthetic CDOs are. They are instruments that are created so that people can bet on them. It''s the la-la-land of ledger entries. It''s not investment in a business that has a good idea. It''s not assisting local governments and building infrastructure. It''s gambling, pure and simple, raw gambling." 10. Witnesses seated at table 11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Swenson, Managing Director, Structured Products Group Trading, Goldman Sachs: "We did not cause the financial crisis, specifically to the mortgage desk, which is what I''m here to speak about. You have two panels in subsequent meetings to speak about that, about the Goldman Sachs and our businesses. We, I do no think that we did anything wrong." 12. Mid shot of clerk taking notes STORYLINE: Defending his company under blistering criticism, the CEO of Goldman Sachs testily told sceptical US senators on Tuesday that customers who bought securities from the Wall Street giant in the run-up to a national financial crisis came looking for risk. Lloyd Blankfein and other Goldman executives were lambasted by lawmakers for "unbridled greed" in an often-electric daylong showdown between Wall Street and Congress - with expletives frequently undeleted. Unrepentant, five present and two past Goldman officials unflinchingly stood by their conduct before a Senate investigatory panel and denied helping to cause the financial near-meltdown that turned into the worst recession since the Great Depression. "Unfortunately, the housing market went south very quickly," Blankfein told sceptical senators. "So people lost money in it." Some top investment bankers on Wall Street are getting bigger year-end bonus checks despite the trou

HEADLINE: How much is your year-end bonus? US Bonuses CAPTION: While many banks have lost money this year, Wall Street bonus checks are up 14%. That leaves many asking 'is that fair?' (Dec. 21) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] "Maybe a hundred bucks." (FONT: New York) That's the year-end bonus this New York hot dog vendor will get. The C-E-O of nearby Goldman Sachs will receive a bit more. Lloyd Blankfein will reportedly take home a 70 million dollar bonus this year for navigating his company past the mortgage meltdown. ((FONT: Joe Bel Bruno, AP Business Writer)) "Mergers and acquisitions are a multi-trillion dollar industry and these guys put together multibillion dollar deals, huge deals, they need to get a cut of it, and there bonuses are going to reflect that." Overall, investors in investment bank stocks have LOST money this year, up to 45 percent in some cases. Yet, Wall Street bonus checks are UP, 14 percent. "Well that's the trick on Wall Street. Everyone wants bigger and better, and you've got to keep increasing them to keep that top talent in their job, or they'll look elsewhere." But some companies are boosting compensation, even though investors have suffered. ((FONT: Ted Shaffrey, the Associated Press)) ((FONT: New York)) "Just this week Morgan Stanley reported its first quarterly loss in the company's history, taking a nine point four billion dollar write down due to the credit crisis. But at the same time, compensation rose 18 percent." For middle and low income earners, Wall Street bonus figures are staggering. ((FONT: Andrew Blais, Investor)) "I think it's out of line with what's going on. Especially in the housing market. Doesn't seem quite fair, doesn't seem in line with what the rest of us are dealing with." ((FONT: Larry Malamut, Investor)) "Executive compensation on Wall Street is out of control." Behind the scenes on Wall Street, lots of people who made losing bets on sub prime mortgages are losing their jobs. Some say those who survive, deserve to be rewarded. ((FONT: Ted Thaxton Jr., Investor)) "This is America, it's free to make, we have free enterprise, I have no problem people who perform, getting bonuses." Goldman Sachs credited its record performance this year to mortgage-backed bonds, and higher investment banking fees. Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press, New York The Associated Press. 19. Investment Banks

01:11:19
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) Professor Shiller characterizes investment banking by contrasting it to consulting, commercial banking, and securities trading. Then, in order to see the essence of investment banking, he reviews some of the principles that John Whitehead, the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, has formulated. These principles are the basis for a discussion of the substantial power that investment bankers have, and their role in society. Government regulation of these powerful investment banks has been a thorny issue for many years, and especially so now since they played a significant role in world financial crisis of the 2000s. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Anderson was an investment banker in London for 12 years, having worked for both Commerzbank as well as the Dresden-based Kleinwort before it was acquired by Commerzbank. For Anderson and his colleagues, bonuses worth more than their set salaries were the norm. The riskier the deal, the higher the commission. But with executive bonuses under fire, how will banks handle the issue as the economy recovers?

Why Investment Banking is a Great Career Path [Podcast Ep. 066]

17:57
The 2008/2009 downturn earned investment banking a giant black eye. While a lot of the headlines were true for the large banks, boutiques and middle market firms had nothing to do with all of that. Investment banking is still a great career path. This is the first of a four-part series about Getting into Investment Banking. Each of these episodes will be a little longer than normal, but hopefully I can answer a lot of the questions I receive about becoming an investment banker. http://financecareerlaunch.com/why-investment-banking-career-path/

A Major Wall Street Investment Banking Firm: Financial Bankruptcy Part 1 (1990)

01:08:06
Drexel Burnham Lambert was a major Wall Street investment banking firm, which first rose to prominence and then was forced into bankruptcy in February 1990 by its involvement in illegal activities in the junk bond market, driven by Drexel employee Michael Milken. At its height, it was the fifth-largest investment bank in the United States. According to Dan Stone, a former Drexel executive, the firm's aggressive culture led many Drexel employees to stray into unethical, and sometimes illegal, conduct. Milken himself viewed the securities laws, rules and regulations with some degree of contempt, feeling they hindered the free flow of trade. He was under nearly constant scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1979 onward, in part because he often condoned unethical and illegal behavior by his colleagues at Drexel's operation in Beverly Hills.[5] However, he personally called Joseph, who believed in following the rules to the letter, on several occasions with ethical questions.[7] The firm was first rocked on May 12, 1986, when Dennis Levine, a Drexel managing director and investment banker, was charged with insider trading. Levine had spent virtually his entire career on Wall Street trading on inside information, unknown to Drexel management when he was hired in 1985. Levine pleaded guilty to four felonies, and implicated one of his recent partners, super-arbitrageur Ivan Boesky. Largely based on information Boesky promised to provide about his dealings with Milken, the SEC initiated an investigation of Drexel on November 17. Two days later, Rudy Giuliani, then the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, launched his own investigation. Ominously, Milken refused to cooperate with Drexel's own internal investigation, only speaking through his attorneys.[5] For two years, Drexel steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the criminal and SEC cases were based almost entirely on the statements of an admitted felon looking to reduce his sentence. However, it was not enough to keep the SEC from suing Drexel in September 1988 for insider trading, stock manipulation, defrauding its clients and stock parking (buying stocks for the benefit of another). All of the transactions involved Milken and his department. The most intriguing charge was that Boesky paid Drexel $5.3 million in 1986 for Milken's share of profits from illegal trading. Earlier in the year, Boesky characterized the payment as a consulting fee to Drexel. Around the same year, Giuliani began seriously considering indicting Drexel under the powerful Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Drexel was potentially liable under the doctrine of respondeat superior, which holds that companies are responsible for an employee's crimes.[5] The threat of a RICO indictment unnerved many at Drexel. A RICO indictment would have required the firm to put up a performance bond of as much as $1 billion in lieu of having its assets frozen. This provision was put in the law because organized crime had a habit of absconding with the funds of indicted companies, and the writers of RICO wanted to make sure there was something to seize or forfeit in the event of a guilty verdict. Unfortunately, most of Drexel's capital was borrowed money, as is common with most Wall Street firms (in Drexel's case, 96 percent—by far the most of any firm). This debt would have to take second place to this performance bond. Additionally, if the bond ever had to be paid, Drexel's stockholders would have been all but wiped out. Due to this, banks will not extend credit to a firm under a RICO indictment.[5] By this time, several Drexel executives—including Joseph—concluded that Drexel could not survive a RICO indictment and would have to seek a settlement with Giuliani. Senior Drexel executives became particularly nervous after Princeton Newport Partners, a small investment partnership, was forced to close its doors in the summer of 1988. Princeton Newport had been indicted under RICO, and the prospect of having to post a huge performance bond forced its shutdown well before the trial. Joseph said years later that he'd been told that if Drexel were indicted under RICO, it would only survive a month at most.[6] Nonetheless, negotiations for a possible plea agreement collapsed on December 19 when Giuliani made several demands that were far too draconian even for those who advocated a settlement. Giuliani demanded that Drexel waive its attorney--client privilege, and also wanted the right to arbitrarily decide that the firm had violated the terms of any plea agreement. He also demanded that Milken leave the firm if the government ever indicted him. Drexel's board unanimously rejected the terms. For a time, it looked like Drexel was going to fight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drexel_Burnham_Lambert

Images and Illusions of Investment Banking: This Is Not My Beautiful House - David Weaver

56:54
David Weaver, who has worked in various capacities on Wall Street since 1982, will examine current public perceptions of investment banking by deconstructing just exactly what is, in fact, the definition of the term, and how it has evolved. His goal is to help people appreciate the various components of investment banking and make decisions (personal career, regulatory, business) based on a richer understanding of the overall business of wholesale bankers. This is the 2013 Sir Thomas Gresham Docklands Lecture. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/Images-and-Illusions-of-Investment-Banking Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Investment Banking - Life as an Investment Banker. SHOCKING TRUTH

25:13
Learn how to get an investment banking, private equity or hedge fund job at https://LandaFinanceJob.com Investment banking is about money, lifestyle, social status and power? WRONG. It's a very destructive lifestyle. Many investment bankers are addicted to drugs and alcohol. A Day in the life of an investment banking analyst and associate is not glamorous. Students go into investment banking because they want to make money, or they want to impress their friends and family. They look for external means of validation (money) to reinforce and provide what should come from inside. Money doesn't replace an internal emptiness or lack of confidence. Working in corporate finance & investment banking is not even as good these days as it was 10 years ago. Yes, you'll work with private equity firms and hedge funds, but there are many ways to make money. And graduating from an Ivy League University to then be disrespected by Senior Bankers is NOT a good decision move. Being an analyst and associate is NOT a good career choice, except it doesn't provide you with good exit opportunities. You're better off focusing on something that you're passionate about and building that up slowly. But I know that people want to make quick money. That's the exact reason why I went into Investment banking and became an investment banker. Why Goldman Sachs Went From Investing For The Rich To Targeting Everyone

Goldman Sachs, the Wall Street investment bank, has a storied history. Founded by Marcus Goldman 150 years ago, his son Henry revolutionized the industry with company valuations and IPOs. It was the gold standard in investment banking for decades and partners got rich when the company went public. But the firm's reputation took a beating during the financial crisis, eventually leading to one of the most interesting pivots in Wall Street history. » Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassic About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Can Chartered Accountants get into Investment Banking

10:42
Can Chartered Accountants get into Investment Banking Well the answer is a Yes and also a No The IB, VC and PE industry works with very thin teams. Plus they are very good paymasters. For e.g. the likes of Matrix Partners offer a fixed+variable CTC of ~50 lacs at entry levels. Hence they are very choosy and prefer the B-school campus where they have a greater likelihood of getting the right fit because of the stringent selection criteria But CAs are quite good also. But not all w.r.t. aspects like Holistic Knowledge of Business, Creating of Financial Models, Valuation Concepts in Depth, MS Excel and PPT, But CAs must start small, with boutique firms, gain relevant experience and then move through connects Case in Point is Akash, now with GIC Singapore : http://mycastory.cajobportal.com/akashkedia/ #AnuragSIngalYouTube

Payments Giant Qiwi’s Execs to Launch Russia’s First Crypto Investment Bank

02:34
Payments Giant Qiwi’s Execs to Launch Russia’s First Crypto Investment Bank Representatives of Russia-based payment services provider Qiwi have created the first crypto investment bank in the Russian market. The project, to be known as HASH, will provide assessment, search and market entry projects, attributes typical of investment banking firms designed to appeal to large investors, according to Kommeresant. HASH will not operate as a Qiwi Group subsidiary. Qiwi Blockchain Technologies (QBT) will serve as HASH’s technology contractor as HASH establishes its token’s purpose, how it will be used and how it will work. Traditional Sector Could Boost Crypto The entry of traditional investment banks into the digital asset market is expected to drive the growth of this high-risk market in relation to its volume. The evolution of the legislative base will also support the market’s growth, experts believe. Following the ICO, which is under preparation, HASH will attract interest from international funds that focus on investing in digital assets. HASH is currently working with 10 such funds, including one with around $100 million. Main Qiwi Shareholder Eyes Progress QBT financial director Yakov Barinsky, who serves a HASH’s project manager, said Qiwi Group’s main shareholder and general director, Sergey Solonin, is interested in the crypto initiative. Solonin told Kommersant he is interested in participating in the project as a strategic investor, but he intends to make a decision after observing the project’s development. Barinsky said the project will receive its commission after a company raises funds in the market, a classic investment banking service monetization model being used in the digital assets market. The digital asset market’s speculative nature and its lack of long money reflect the lack of understanding of the costs involved. The project has postponed securing a trading license for the next year, Barinsky said. ICOs with Russian participation accounted for 60% to 80% of placements, according to data. Since the start of the year, 530 ICOs have been undertaken, drawing $11.9 billion, according to Coinschedule, largest being Telegram’s $1.7 billion ICO. Traditional Investment Bankers Reserved Traditional investment banking observers were reserved about the project. VTB Group, a Russia based global provider of financial services comprised of more than 20 credit institutions and financial companies, believes traditional investment banks’ interest in digital assets will increase in relation to the legislative base’s improvement in the sector. ►A source https://www.instagram.com/bitcoin.info/ Bitcoin NEWS 🔵 🌐| Best bitcoin information🥇 📈| Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency earning ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bitcoin.info/ ►Telegram: https://t.me/Bitco_info ►Subscribe to a channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQPC5ra4hUizg8XXa1lF6Qg?sub_confirmation=1 $ bitcoin donation: 1GC79bdmPFW4tZWp8ZL8jpFVjaaTjbEUt9

OccupytheSEC: Enforce the Volcker Rule! Separate investment banks from retail banks.

07:16
New York, February 13th 2012--At a pre-march rally in Liberty Plaza, members of Occupy the SEC explain why it's necessary to enforce the Volcker Rule to separate investment banks from retail banks. This morning Occupy SEC delivered a 325-page document with suggestions for closing the loopholes which enable banks to evade the provisions of the Volcker Rule. The march made a loop around the Federal Reserve Bldg which takes up a whole block on Maiden Lane, stopping for a mic check and speak out before heading west to the SEC building. For an update on the SEC's response to Occupy's comments, see http://www.occupythesec.org, For a review of the 325-page Volcker comment letter, see http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmon/2012/02/14/occupys-amazing-volcker-rule-letter/ Background note courtesy the BBC: Glass-Steagall A US law dating from the 1930s Great Depression that separated ordinary commercial banking from investment banking. Like the UK's planned ring-fence, the law was intended to protect banks which lend to consumers and businesses - deemed vital to the US economy - from the risky speculation of investment banks. The law was repealed in 1999, largely to enable the creation of the banking giant Citigroup - a move that many commentators say was a contributing factor to the 2008 financial crisis. Buying gold as an investment -- good or bad? There is a huge portion of financial media that fixates on gold. The most common argument you’ll see is that gold is a hedge for economic collapse – gold is seen as a safe place to store money because it’s been used as a form of currency for thousands of years. That history, plus gold’s global appeal and limited supply sells a lot of people on the value of gold as an investment. But is it actually a good idea? As an investor, you’re looking to buy something that will be worth more in the future than it is today. To measure that, a lot of people will look at the “intrinsic value” – or the inherent worth of a company, property, or asset. Most of this analysis will look at the money the potential investment over time might generate In the case of a company, you’d look at the expected profits the business would generate over time. As a shareholder, you’re a part owner of the business and so your stock entitles you to a sliver of those earnings. For a business that is growing over time, earnings should go up, and the value of your piece of ownership should follow. What’s tricky about gold is that as an asset, it doesn’t actually generate cash. The piece of gold you own today will be the same piece of gold 5 years from now, no more and no less. If you buy a house, you can decide to rent it out, and over time the rental payments you receive could provide a steady flow of cash. Alternatively, you can live in the house and instead of paying rent month after month, you would be making mortgage payments and building equity over time in an asset that is capable of creating cash flows. On its own, gold can’t generate cash, which makes it harder to value. The value of gold is really tied to its scarcity – that gives it value in the jewelry market and it makes it useful as a store of value and means of exchange. Some of you probably heard that and thought “what the heck does that mean?” Globally, gold is recognized as a precious metal, and that worldwide recognition means it readily can be exchanged across borders and cultures, which is part of the reason why major institutions like central banks maintain gold reserves. It’s also why some investors want in on gold. They view it as a hedge against economic instability and inflation. Paper dollars, like the US dollar are “fiat currency” -- meaning they have value because we say they have value -- sound familiar? So, if events unfold that lead people to question the value of a fiat currency, OR the government takes actions that change the value of a currency -- like printing waaaaay more bills and giving them out to people -- the currency can lose value. If a currency loses value, the relative value of gold, as expressed in that currency, will shoot up, allowing investors in gold to profit. Some people keep money in gold because it is less tied to any one government and isn’t as impacted by inflation or an economic collapse in any one country. But it’s merit as an investment really depends on the timeline you’re looking at. From September 2008 to August of 2011, the price of gold went up over 100% while stocks in the US eeked out 1% gains on a total return basis. There’s money to be made investing in gold, but it comes down to being right about gold at the right time -- because gold tends to surge in value when major financial systems are struggling. Since September of 2011, stocks have returned over 180% on a total return basis while the price of gold has fallen nearly 30% AND the returns of the S&P 500 trounce those of gold on a 1,3,5, and 10 year basis. And for people with a very long time horizon, since 1990, The S&P 500 has posted 1,400% gains on a total return basis. Over the same nearly 30 year period, gold has returned 220%. If you are worried about an economic downturn, it may make sense to have a small portion of your portfolio in gold, but it certainly shouldn’t be your main investing strategy, and for many time periods, you’d be better off being all in stocks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

Investment Banks Citigroup and BofA Take a Hit on Earnings

01:01
Stocks extended their losing streak into a fifth session at the opening bell Thursday on disappointing quarterly results from Bank of America and Citigroup. Bank of America reported a 14% drop in quarterly profit while Citigroup's fourth quarter profit plummeted 86% from a year earlier. Gold, however, is soaring and oil commodity prices are getting a boost as international investors look for safe havens and as European markets are being hit hard. Plus, BlackRock stock is taking a small set back even as its iShares platform sees assets under management increase. U.S. markets are defying international slumps -- but that may not continue. Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool.
