Sanford I. "Sandy" Weill (born March 16, 1933) is an American banker, financier and philanthropist. He is a former chief executive and chairman of Citigroup. He served in those positions from 1998 until October 1, 2003, and April 18, 2006, respectively. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0743247264/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0743247264&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=9a4623139d172f3b97151775dc62c2e0 Weill, shortly after graduating from Cornell University, got his first job on Wall Street in 1955 -- as a runner for Bear Stearns. In 1956, Weill became a licensed broker at Bear Stearns. Rather than making phone calls or personal visits to solicit clients, Weill found he was far more comfortable sitting at his desk, poring through companies' financial statements and disclosures made to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. For weeks his only client was his mother, Etta, until Joan persuaded an ex-boyfriend to open a brokerage account. While working at Bear Stearns, Weill was a neighbor of Arthur L. Carter who was working at Lehman Brothers. Together with Roger Berlind and Peter Potoma they would form Carter, Berlind, Potoma & Weill in May 1960. In 1962 the firm became Carter, Berlind & Weill after the New York Stock Exchange brought disciplinary proceedings against Potoma. In 1968, with the departure of Arthur Carter, the firm was renamed Cogan, Berlind, Weill & Levitt (Marshall Cogan, Arthur Levitt), or CBWL jokingly referred to on Wall Street as "Corned Beef With Lettuce". Weill served as the firm's Chairman from 1965 to 1984, a period in which it completed over 15 acquisitions to become the country's second largest securities brokerage firm. The company became CBWL-Hayden, Stone, Inc. in 1970; Hayden Stone, Inc. in 1972; Shearson Hayden Stone in 1974, when it merged with Shearson Hammill & Co.; and Shearson Loeb Rhoades in 1979, when it merged with Loeb, Rhoades, Hornblower & Co. With capital totaling $250 million, Shearson Loeb Rhoades trailed only Merrill Lynch as the securities brokerage industry's largest firm. In 1981, Weill sold Shearson Loeb Rhoades to American Express for about $930 million in stock. (Sources differ on the precise figure.) In 1982, he founded the National Academy Foundation with the Academy of Finance to educate students that would graduate from High School. Weill began serving as president of American Express Co. in 1983 and as chairman and CEO of American Express's insurance subsidiary, Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, in 1984. Weill was succeeded by his protégé, Peter A. Cohen, who became the youngest head of a Wall Street firm. While at American Express, Weill began grooming his newest protégé, Jamie Dimon, the future CEO of JPMorgan Chase. Increasing tensions between Weill and the chairman of American Express, James D. Robinson III, led Weill to resign in August 1985 at age 52. After a failed attempt to become the CEO of BankAmerica Corp. (and "take over" Merrill Lynch, according to a Jamie Dimon interview in 2002), he set his sights a little lower and persuaded Minneapolis-based Control Data Corporation to spin off a troubled subsidiary, Commercial Credit, a consumer finance company. In 1986, with $7 million of his own money invested in the company, Weill took over as CEO of Commercial Credit. After a round of deep layoffs and reorganization, the company completed a successful IPO. In 1987, he acquired Gulf Insurance. The next year, he paid $1.5 billion for Primerica, the parent company of Smith Barney and the A. L. Williams insurance company. In 1989 he acquired Drexel Burnham Lambert's retail brokerage outlets. In 1992, he paid $722 million to buy a 27 percent share of Travelers Insurance, which had gotten into trouble because of bad real estate investments. In 1993 he reacquired his old Shearson brokerage (now Shearson Lehman) from American Express for $1.2 billion. By the end of the year, he had completely taken over Travelers Corp in a $4 billion stock deal and officially began calling his corporation Travelers Group Inc. In 1996 he added to his holdings, at a cost of $4 billion, the property and casualty operations of Aetna Life & Casualty. In September 1997 Weill acquired Salomon Inc., the parent company of Salomon Brothers Inc. for over $9 billion in stock. In April 1998, Travelers Group announced an agreement to undertake the $76 billion merger between Travelers and Citicorp, and the merger was completed on October 8, 1998. The possibility remained that the merger would run into problems connected with federal law. Ever since the Glass--Steagall Act, banking and insurance businesses had been kept separate. Weill and John S. Reed bet that Congress would soon pass legislation overturning those regulations, which Weill, Reed and a number of businesspeople considered not in their interest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Weill

In this Revenue Models lesson, you'll learn how to build a revenue model for a consumer retail company. By http://breakingintowallstreet.com/ "Financial Modeling Training And Career Resources For Aspiring Investment Bankers" Chuck E. Cheese, a kids' restaurant chain that was acquired by Apollo for $1.3 billion, is used in this example since their data is readily available and easy to use Table of Contents: 0:39 Why Revenue Models Are Important 2:19 How to Set Up Revenue Models - Units Sold and Market Size Methods 3:39 How You Build a Revenue Model - Examples for Different Industries 5:03 Step 1 - Finding Historical Data 5:59 Step 2 - Assumptions for Stores Opened and Closed 8:02 Step 3 - Assumptions for Sales per Store Growth 9:03 Step 4 - Calculating Ending Stores per Year 10:30 Step 5 - Toggle Calculations for Sales per Store 11:08 Step 6 - Splitting Revenue Into Segments 14:20 Step 7 - How to Review and Tweak the Numbers 15:18 Recap and Summary Why Do Revenue Models Matter? It's a very common topic in case studies and interviews in IB, PE, HFs, and anything else in finance. Revenue models can come up in LBO case studies, 3-statement modeling case studies, normal interview questions, and, of course, on the job. Often, you have enough data to make MORE than just a simple % growth rate assumption for revenue... but not enough data to do the same on the expense side. Theoretically, you could just say 2%, 3%, 4%, etc. growth each year and project revenue like that. BUT it's much more credible to say, "We have 50 stores each generating $2 million in annual sales, on average, and we plan to open 5 new stores per year for the next 5 years -- based on that, revenue is expected to be..." rather than "We're assuming 4% revenue growth per year." The numbers you get will NOT necessarily be different or "more accurate" -- you're still predicting the future! But at least your numbers will have more real-world support behind them... What is a Revenue Model? It can be done many different ways, but most revenue models boil down to Units Sold * Average Selling Price, or Total Market Size * % Market Share. The best method depends on the available data, the work and research you've done, and what the company discloses. For this consumer/retail example, it makes the most sense to use a variation on Units Sold * Average Selling Price, since "market share" is almost impossible to establish for a large and fragmented market like restaurants. How Do You Build a Revenue Model? For retailers, you can divide revenue into into existing stores vs. new stores and assume a figure for average Sales per Square Foot/Meter, or Sales per Store, and then make assumptions for new stores opened, stores closed, and how the sales per store figures change over time. Here's what we cover in this example for Chuck E. Cheese: Step 1: Get the historical data you need -- in this case, the # of stores opened and closed in prior years, and the average sales per store type. These are all taken from the company's filings. Step 2: Make assumptions for the # of stores opened and closed each year -- companies often disclose their plans in their filings, or you can extrapolate from historical data. In this case, CEC told us directly how many stores it planned to open over the next 4 years. Step 3: Assume a growth rate in Sales per Comparable (Existing) Store, and Sales per New Store. Step 4: Calculate Ending Stores each year, with support for the sensitivity toggles built in so that we can easily modify the assumptions. Step 5: Now, make similar "post-toggle" calculations for Sales per New Store and Sales per Existing Store. Step 6: Now, divide the revenue into segments, if applicable... it is very much applicable here! There are different margins for entertainment vs. food and beverages, and there's a clear trend in one direction (away from food and beverages). Step 7: Now, go back and check your numbers, fill in the miscellaneous and smaller items, and see how equity research estimates (and other sources) compare to what you've come up with. Go back and tweak your numbers as necessary. What Next? Pick a company you're interested in, in an industry that's relatively easy to analyze, and project revenue based on what's in their filings. It doesn't have to be super-complicated -- for most companies, revenue comes down to less than 5 key drivers. Avoid conglomerates, companies with tons of business lines, or industries that are more complex, such as oil & gas, commercial banking, etc. Suggestions: Airlines, technology, consumer/retail, industrials/manufacturing, healthcare is iffy because it can get very complex to model a company with a huge drug portfolio. So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. In this instalment of out Knowledge Plus series, we welcome Hao Nguyen from MoneySpot Investments to address the topic ‘Investing in Consumer Finance’. A consumer loan is money lent to an individual for personal, family, or household purposes (say, renovating a house). These loans are some of the banks’ most lucrative assets, and for a long time, they were an investment option only available to the banks. However, things are changing, and with the rise of P2P lending, ordinary people can invest in consumer loans as well. On September 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, and signaled the start of the Great Recession. One key cause of that recession was a failure of financial intermediaries, or, the institutions that link different kinds of savers to borrowers. We’ll get to intermediaries in the next video, but for now, we’ll first look at the market intermediaries are involved in. This market is the combination of savers and borrowers—what we call the “market for loanable funds.” To start, we’ll represent the market, using two curves you know well—supply and demand. The quantity supplied in the market comes from savings, and the quantity demanded comes from loans. But as you know, we have to factor in price. In the case of the market for loanable funds, the price is the current interest rate. What happens to the supply of savings when the interest rate goes up? When are borrowers compelled to borrow more? Or less? We’ll cover these scenarios in this video. One quick note: there’s not really one unified market for loanable funds. Instead, there are many small markets, with different sorts of lenders, lending to different sorts of borrowers. As we said in the beginning, it’s financial intermediaries, like banks, bond markets, and stock markets, which link these different sides of the market. We’ll get a better understanding of these intermediaries in our next video, so stay tuned! personal finance 101, personal finance basics, and fundamentals. personal finance is the science of handling money. it involves all financial decisions and activities of an individual or household – the practices of earning, saving, investing and spending. matters of personal finance include the purchasing of financial products, like credit cards, life and home insurance, mortgages and of course various investments and investment vehicles. banking is also considered a part of personal finance, including checking and savings accounts and 21st century online or mobile payment services like paypal and venmo. all individual financial activities fall under the purview of personal finance; personal financial planning generally involves analyzing your current financial position, predicting short-term and long-term needs and executing a plan to fulfill those need within individual financial constraints. it depends on one's expenses, income, living requirements and individual goals and desires. among the most important aspects of personal finance are: assessing expected cash flow, buying insurance, calculating and filing taxes, savings and investment, and retirement planning. as a specialized field, personal finance is a fairly recent development, though colleges and schools have taught aspects of it as "home economics" or "consumer economics" since the early 1900s. the field was initially disregarded by male economists, as "home economics" appeared to be the purview of home-making women. however, more recently economists have repeatedly stressed widespread education in matters of personal finance as integral to microeconomics and the overall economy. market theory and practice are largely guided by assuming the presence of the invisible hand: the idea that all consumers in a market economy will act rationally, or in their own self-interest. in theory, this makes market fluctuations predictable and provides assurance that their movements have been in the interest of the consumer. however, scholars and behavioral economists in the late 20th and 21st centuries began to question that assumption, arguing that consumers actually act irrationally as a result of under-education in a more complicated and less comprehensible economy. many consumers simply do not have the information to make the most rational financial decisions for themselves, or they are manipulated by circumstance or misinformation to perceive a decision as being more rational than it actually is.

See more news on our website - http://streets-news.com Not bad. JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s (JPM - Get Report) second-quarter earnings showed strength in its consumer business and growth in client investment assets, but the bank still has the yield curve to pay attention to and how long the expansion cycle will last. "The report is in line with expectations, but the market is worried about the flat yield curve," says James DePorre, a Real Money contributor. "That is what is going to impact all the banks more than the results from the second quarter. I think the sector will stay under pressure due to the yield curve issues." The lender's average core loans grew 7% in the second quarter, deposits increased 5%, and trading revenue rose 13%. The flattening yield curve has preceded almost every recession for the past 50 years, raising questions whether JP Morgan's can grow its lending business in the event of the Federal Reserve boosting benchmark interest rates, CFRA equity analyst Ken Leon said Friday. "There is a lot of questions today whether they can sustain growth in lending as the Fed raises rates maybe once or twice this year or next," Leon said. Leon noted that the JPMorgan's home and auto lending dropped with net revenue from consumer and community banking falling by about $100 million to $12.497 billion. "They don't want a mismatch between long and short term rates they can borrow and lend at," he noted. Client investment assets surged 12% to $284 billion, the company said. The bank's net income rose 18% to $8.32 billion from $7.03 billion a year ago. JPMorgan stock ended Friday down 0.46% to $106.36. The S&P 500 Banks Index declined almost 1%. CEO Jamie Dimon cited "good global economic growth, particularly in the U.S., where consumer and business sentiment is high." This is why JPMorgan Chase is a holding in Jim Cramer's charitable trust and subscription newsletter Action Alerts PLUS.
