What you need to know about the J-1 Visa, the Cultural Exchange Visa specifically for practical training and internship to allow students and trainees to come and work in the United States. 00:19 J-1 Visa specifically designed for trainees and individuals that are seeking experience that is typically not available in their home country and they want to come to the United States as part of the cultural exchange program to gain an experience so they can go back home and, and use that when they finish their program. 1:33 The J-1 program is administered by the State Department typically and is not controlled by the U.S. Immigration Service like many other visas. And it also requires a third party sponsor that is typically controlling and supervising the program wherever that trainee is designated to. 2:40 Under the work and travel J-1, this is typically happens in the summer period of the foreign trainee. . The work and travel is a 90 days program where you apply and get that J-1 designation. 3:43 Typically Hospitality J-1's are issued for about a year 4:41 For J-1 trainees or interns, there has to be an employer that is already designated then a third party agency that will process the training program and then once it's approved, the applicants will go and apply for the J-1 Visa at their home country embassy. 5:39 Most trainees should be under the age of 35. And the idea is that they want to encourage younger people to gain experience so they can bring it back to their home country 6:24 the fact that you already held a J-1 Visa will make you much more attractive to get other visas in the future Everything is filed with the State Department and upon approval you can come to U.S. for a year or for between one year and 18 months and do your training. It's really good visa for people that are interested in exploring their life in the U.S. to see if they like it. Follow us: https://www.facebook.com/myimmigratio... for daily updates. Multiple programs exist and qualify under the J1 visa and the application must be sponsored by the institution. The university where you are doing your postdoctoral research will apply for your J1 visa to the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational Cultural Affairs. There are many different visa options for PhDs. One other option is the H1B visa. This category of visa will typically be your option if you start a job in industry after your PhD, while you are still on OPT (Optional Professional Training) through your school’s international student services office in order to be permitted to stay and work in the U.S. Your employer, whether in industry or academia, will have to sponsor your application for H1B to the USCIS. The official USCIS website is https://www.uscis.gov/ You can check your immigration case status here: https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do But I really suggest you to create an account under "My USCIS" click here to create an account: https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/disclaimer.do Once you create account account on My USCIS, you will be able to receive any updates on your application via text and/or email address. I was able to get alerts on my account on July 17, 2017 for my Naturalization petition Form N-400 directly to my phone number via text message, and I also got an email notification about my case status. USCIS usually update their processing time information every 18th of each month. but instead of constantly checking for updates on your immigration case, why not just sign in for an account on "My USCIS" turn on text and email alerts, and you will be notify of any changes on your immigration case. View Report: https://cis.org/Report/Analyzing-New-Visa-Overstay-Report A report by the Center for Immigration Studies provides new analysis of the Department of Homeland Security's annual Entry/Exit Data Overstay Report, which identified over 700,000 overstayers in 2017, a decline of about five percent from 2016. The analysis shows that certain categories of visitors, particularly student and exchange visitors and guestworkers, have especially high overstay rates. Reducing opportunities for visitors to secure illegal employment may be the most effective deterrent to shrink the massive number of visa overstays.
