The point of designing a research study and collecting data is to analyze that data so you can draw a conclusion. Analyzing data involves comparing the independent and dependent variables of your study to see if there are any relationships and then seeing if those results can give you more information about the original research question or hypothesis. We will look more closely at how you develop a conclusion based on your findings and then, how you go about reporting those findings in a way that meets the criteria of the scientific community. This workshop was designed to provide guidance and strategies for writing scientific journal articles using strong and effective academic language. The workshop examined the following: - Producing a research article (following IMRAD structure: Intro, methods, results, and discussion) - Making scientific concepts clear through critical thinking and robust writing skills - Exercises and group discussion for honing scientific writing abilities to a high standard Some exercises were adapted from: Margaret Cargill and Patrick O’Connor (2013). Presenter Dr Liz Tynan Liz is senior lecturer and co-ordinator research student academic support at the JCU Graduate Research School. She teaches academic writing and critical thinking skills to postgraduate students and has particular responsibility for convening the Skills for International Postgraduates (SKIP) program. She also has an adjunct senior lecturer appointment at the College of Arts, Society and Education. She is a former journalism academic with a background in both print and electronic media, and a speciality in science writing and editing. She has worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) as a reporter and subeditor, and was later Sydney correspondent for New Scientist. She is co-author of the Oxford University Press textbook Media and Journalism: New Approaches to Theory and Practice, now in its third edition. She is also co-author and co-ordinating editor of the OUP text, Communication for Business, released in October 2013. Chain-in 2018: Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Conference (www.chain-in.org) Abstract: The Blockchain has taken most academic communities by surprise. What began as an intriguing research project initiated by a single researcher or group of researchers working under the pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto (Nakamoto, 2018) turned into worldwide phenomenon. Several years after its invention, bestselling books that mainly addressed a general audience predicted substantial societal, economic and political implications of Blockchain technology (Swan, 2015; Tapscott and Tapscott, 2016). Simultaneously, the industry started to invest heavily in the technology, which it still the situation in the middle of 2018. Apart from communities specialized in computer science and cryptography, academia by and large has ignored this development and is now quickly trying to catch up. This pertains to basically all research communities investigating legal, societal, political, economic and business-related issues. The current situation can partly be explained by lengthy and complicated academic publishing cycles, but many researchers are also reluctant to pick up new research areas that are technologically sophisticated and not fully developed yet. In my presentation I will discuss potentially interesting research questions from various disciplines and the methodology as well as theories researchers can apply to investigate those questions. Furthermore, I will highlight the necessity for interdisciplinary research, since the impact of current research will increase drastically if, for example, computer scientists, legal experts and business researchers work together rather than pursuing their interests individually. In order to be able to do so, however, those researchers need to understand the objectives and methods of the other disciplines. Finally, the cooperation of academic researchers with the industry will yield research projects that are both rigorous and relevant. Examples of such projects will also be given in my talk. Biography: Prof. Dr. Horst Treiblmaier is a Professor in International Management at MODUL University Austria. He received a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems in 2001 from the Vienna University of Economics and Business in Austria and worked as a Visiting Professor at Purdue University, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of British Columbia (UBC), University of Technology in Sydney (UTS) and the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research (KIMEP). He has more than fifteen years of experience as a researcher and consultant and has worked on projects with Microsoft, Google, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). His research interests include the economic and business implications of Blockchain, cryptoeconomics, methodological and epistemological problems of social science research and gamification. Currently he serves on the board of the “City of Blockchain”, an Austrian association promoting the Blockchain and cryptographic technologies. His research has appeared in journals such as Information Systems Journal, Structural Equation Modeling, DATABASE for Advances in Information Systems, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, Information & Management, Journal of Electronic Commerce Research, Journal of Global Information Management, Schmalenbach Business Review, and Wirtschaftsinformatik (Business & Information Systems Engineering).

It is common to assume that players in strategic settings will make decisions in ways predicted by game theory, adopting so-called Nash equilibrium strategies. (These are named after Nobel-prize winner John Nash, the protagonist of the move "Beautiful Mind".) However, experimental studies have demonstrated that Nash equilibrium is often a poor description of human players' behavior, even in the very simple case of unrepeated simultaneous-move interactions. Nevertheless, human behavior in such settings is far from random. Drawing on data from real human play, the field of behavioral game theory has developed a variety of models that aim to capture these patterns. The current state of the art in that literature is a model called quantal cognitive hierarchy. It predicts that agents approximately best respond and explicitly model others' beliefs to a finite depth, grounded in a uniform model of nonstrategic play. We have shown that even stronger models can be built by drawing on ideas from cognitive psychology to better describe nonstrategic behavior. However, this whole approach requires extensive expert knowledge and careful choice of functional form. Deep learning presents an alternative, offering the promise of automatic cognitive modeling. We introduce a novel architecture that allows a single network to generalize across different input and output dimensions by using matrix units rather than scalar units, and show that its performance significantly outperforms that of the previous state of the art. evin Leyton-Brown is a professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia and an associate member of the Vancouver School of Economics. He holds a PhD and M.Sc. from Stanford University (2003; 2001) and a B.Sc. from McMaster University (1998). He studies the intersection of computer science and microeconomics, addressing computational problems in economic contexts and incentive issues in multiagent systems. He also applies machine learning to the automated design and analysis of algorithms for solving hard computational problems. He has co-taught two Coursera courses on "Game Theory" to over half a million students, and has received awards for his teaching at UBC—notably, a 2013/14 Killam Teaching Prize. He is chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Electronic Commerce, which runs the annual Economics & Computation conference. Dr. M. S. Krishnan ("Krishnan") is Mary and Mike Hallman e-Business Fellow, Area Chairman and Professor of Business Information Technology at the University of Michigan Business School. Dr, Krishnan is also a Co-Director of the Center for Global Resource Leverage:India at the Michigan Business School. Dr. Krishnan received his Ph.D. in Information Systems from the Graduate School of Industrial Administration, Carnegie Mellon University in 1996. He has co-authored the book "The New Age of Innovation: Driving Co-Created Value with Global Networks" with C.K.Prahalad. He was awarded the ICIS Best Dissertation Prize for his Doctoral Thesis on "Cost and Quality Considerations in Software Product Management". His research interest includes Corporate IT strategy, Business value of IT investments, and management of distributed business processes, software engineering economics, metrics and measures for quality, productivity and customer satisfaction for products in software and information technology industries. In January 2000, American Society for Quality (ASQ) selected him as one of the 21 voices of quality for the twenty first century. His research articles have appeared in several journals including Management Science, Information Systems Research Information Technology and People, Strategic Management Journal, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Software, Decision Support Systems, Harvard Business Review, Information Week, Sloan Management Review, Optimize and Communications of the ACM. His article "The role of team factors in software cost and quality" was awarded the 1999 ANBAR Electronic Citation of Excellence. He serves on the editorial board of reputed academic journals including Management Science and Information Systems Research. Dr. Krishnan has consulted with Ford Motor Company, NCR, HIP, IBM, ICICI, NBC, Marketics, Techvoyant, TVS group and Ramco Systems.

Everyone has an opinion on music; people enjoy it daily all around the world. Matthias Mauch enjoys it too, but he also likes to look at it from a slightly different perspective. By using quantitative analyses, he looks a little closer on what is actually happening in popular music during the last 50 years. His analyses show remarkable findings in the structure and diversity of music. It is almost like looking at music with a pair of evolutionary biologist eyes…well…that IS what he eventually did - he utilised selection, recombination and mutation, to explain the evolution of music. Matthias Mauch is a researcher in music informatics. As an undergraduate mathematics student in Rostock, Germany, he earned his pocket money as an amateur musician. Combining his passions for maths and music he went on to do a Ph.D. in electronic engineering at Queen Mary University of London – on algorithms to automatically transcribe chords from music recordings. After a post-doc in Japan and a Research Fellowship at Last.fm returned to Queen Mary in 2012 on a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship, investigating music signal processing, human singing, and the evolution of musical style. He’s published over 40 peer-reviewed conference and journal papers. Together with his research collaborators from Imperial College London he’s a recipient of a 2012 Cozzarelli Prize for scientific excellence and originality from the National Academy of Sciences of the USA. New journal will explore the theory and practice of improving human “brainpower”: Heidelberg | New York, 1 June 2016 Springer is launching the Journal of Cognitive Enhancement: Towards the integration of theory and practice, a new interdisciplinary psychology publication. The journal will contribute to a higher understanding of research aimed at enhancing human performance and creative potential. Submissions will be accepted in 2016, with the first issue to be published in March 2017. Lorenza S. Colzato of Leiden University in The Netherlands is the editor-in-chief. The Journal of Cognitive Enhancement will pursue a theory-driven approach that aims to understand and explain how social cognitive processes, such as human perception, attention, memory, cognitive control, and action in healthy individuals, may be enhanced. The methods to achieve this include meditation, video games, smart drugs, food supplements, nutrition, brain stimulation, neurofeedback, physical exercise, music and cognitive training. Research on cognitive enhancement is becoming a hot topic, given that the recent economic problems of the welfare system, in both Eastern and Western societies, have boosted the interest in “enhancing” procedures and activities that will make welfare societally more affordable. For instance, cognitive enhancement can help to delay cognitive decline in the elderly, which would extend the time people can live autonomously and, thus, reduce the welfare costs for the time thereafter. “In my early professional years,” said Dr. Colzato, “I was asking the question: How can I make the memory of this person function better? Medicine 2.0: Using Machine Learning to Transform Medical Practice and Discovery In this talk, Mihaela will present her view of the transformation of medicine through the use of machine learning, and some of her own contributions. This transformation is already being felt in every aspect of medicine: from clinical support for personalized diagnosis and prognosis to the estimation of individualized treatment effects without the need for clinical trials to medical discovery to the entire path of patient care. The heart of this transformation is the intelligent use of existing data. Because of the unique and complex characteristics of medical data and medical questions, many familiar methods are inadequate. Mihaela’s work develops novel machine learning methods and applies them to a wide variety of medical settings. This work achieves enormous improvements over current clinical practice and over existing machine learning methods. This talk will explore some of Mihaela’s work and vision of how data science can transform medical discovery and care. Biography Mihaela van der Schaar is the Man Professor, Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford and Faculty Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute. Her main research interest is on machine learning and artificial intelligence applied to medicine. She is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow (2009) and has been a Distinguished Lecturer of the Communications Society, the Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, and member of the Senior Editorial Board member of IEEE Journal on Emerging and Selected Topics in Circuits and Systems (JETCAS) and IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing (JSTSP).
