Think Safe. Choose Safe. Be Safe: Air Dangerous Goods

00:57
Toxic. Corrosive. Flammable. These all seem like alarming terms to describe a package, and UPS takes shipping these and other Air Dangerous Goods seriously. Until April 3, UPS mostly carried lower quantities of DGs compared to competitors. “We just increased our air capabilities with the global DG expansion because our healthcare customers and other companies are looking for us to be more flexible and able to deliver the products they have,” said Air Dangerous Goods Manager Bob McClelland. “Flexibility in our dangerous goods offerings and being at parity or better with the competition in this area is a business priority.” Bob said that there have been many other changes in what customers ship, even before the expansion. “The influx of technology-based products has increased the number of dangerous goods in our system.” Fully regulated DGs must pass in front of an acceptance auditor who is trained in the FAA-approved UPS Dangerous Goods Program. The auditors use specific checklists to validate every shipment. Packages are checked for dangerous goods marks and labels, indications of damages or leaks, and compliance with all regulations and UPS restrictions. Once a DG has passed inspection, the package is placed into the system. The next check is completed by a loader, or forklift driver if in the Worldport Freight Facility, who is trained to identify hazmat. This employee ensures that the package has been acceptance audited, looks for damages or leaks, and loads the package securely into a container or onto a pallet. In addition to employee checks, one UPS system that helps manage DGs is the Hazardous Material Management System. HMMS helps ensure that packages comply with regulations and quantity limits, and prevents exceeding allowable amounts of DGs on an aircraft. This system also produces the hazmat documentation for the pilot, called the Notification to Captain, or NOTOC. Every employee has a responsibility when it comes to safely shipping dangerous goods, according to Bob, who said that employees should always: 1. Recognize DGs in the system. 2. Ensure packages are acceptable to be loaded. 3. Verify DGs are not leaking or damaged. 4. Load hazmats securely into a container or onto a pallet. “Ultimately it is about making sure our people are properly trained on handling hazardous materials to help safeguard the flight of an aircraft,” he said.
