A Japanese Method to Develop Creativity in Kids

09:17
Japanese people are known for their intelligence, politeness, and wellness. Why is this nation so unique and different from the rest of the world? It seems we’ve found the answer – they have an incredibly cool education system and unique teaching methods! There is a unique method in Japanese schools for developing creativity in kids. We believe that the whole world needs to adopt it! It’s called “Nameless paints.” In this video, we'll tell you how it works. Watch till the end – there is a small but brilliant bonus for you. Other videos you might like: 15 Examples of Japanese Etiquette That Will Drive You Crazy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR-H7yr9Ceo& Why Japanese Are So Thin According to Science https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxsnYsA549Y& 8 Japanese Parenting Rules All Kids Need https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_gnpIs8qMo& TIMESTAMPS: “Nameless paints” 0:34 Manners before knowledge 2:58 The academic year starts on April 1st 3:33 Students clean their school themselves 4:18 School lunch is provided on a standardized menu 4:59 After-school workshops are very popular 5:32 Students learn Japanese calligraphy and poetry 6:15 Students have to wear school uniform 6:50 The school attendance rate is about 99.99% 7:23 A single test decides the students’ futures 7:55 College years are the best ’holidays’ in life 8:32 SUMMARY: - “Nameless paints” includes ten tubes that don’t have color names such as “yellow,” “blue,” or “green.” Instead, there are only spots of a particular color or colors on each tube. As you can see, the spots are also different sizes. - In Japanese schools, students don’t take any exams until they reach grade four (the age of 10). The goal for the first three years of school is not to judge the child’s knowledge, but to establish good manners and to develop their character. - While most schools in the world begin their academic year in September or October, in Japan, it is April that marks the start of the academic and business calendar. The first day of school often coincides with one of the most beautiful natural phenomena — the time of cherry blossom. - In Japanese schools, students have to clean the classrooms, cafeterias, and even toilets all by themselves. Most Japanese schools do not employ janitors or custodians. - All classmates eat in their classroom together with the teacher. This helps build positive teacher-student relationships. - To get into a good junior high school, most Japanese students enter a preparatory school or attend private after-school workshops. - Japanese calligraphy, or Shodo, involves dipping a bamboo brush in ink and using it to write hieroglyphs on rice paper. - While some schools have their attire, traditional Japanese school uniform consists of a military style for boys and a sailor outfit for girls. - At the end of high school, Japanese students have to take an exam that determines their future. A student can choose one college they would like to go to, and that college has a particular score requirement. - Having gone through ‘examination hell,’ Japanese students usually take a little break. In this country, college is often considered the best years of a person’s life. Sometimes, Japanese people call this period a ‘vacation’ before work. Service-Learning as a pedagogy to promote English for Academic Purposes

31:25
Abstract: It has often been noted that English as a Second Language (ESL) students are more commonly passive recipients, not active contributors, of service-learning. This essay critically reviews 62 research articles and book chapters (1998-2011) in which ESL students are participants of service-learning courses, in order to examine how ESL students are currently perceived by service-learning practitioners from a variety of disciplines, and how ESL instructors can take charge in improving this perception. The literature was divided into two main categories based on the ESL students' role in the community service: 44 articles assigned ESL students a Passive role, while only 18 articles allowed an Active role to be given to the ESL students. Findings demonstrate that while passive courses are well-intentioned, they often foster six negative dimensions in the relationships between the American college students and the ESL students they serve: (1) reinforce the default hierarchy, (2) maintain an underlying sense of othering, (3) emphasize the privileges of American students, (4) stop at reciprocal benefits rather than challenge reciprocal agency, (5) expose American students just enough to reinforce socially sanctioned stereotypes, and (6) encourage the idea that one must be a citizen of the community to contribute to it. On the other hand, findings also show that when ESL students are given the opportunity to actively contribute to the community, a number of issues developed with the American students are largely left untouched by the ESL instructor. Seven of these issues are (1) the extent to which the service is fully integrated into the course curriculum, (2) accommodations for continuity of abilities, (3) ongoing critical reflection, (4) Dewey's definition of a truly educational experience, (5) valuing of community, (6) incorporation of technology, and (7) global citizenship. Having identified six problems with the Passive articles and seven opportunities for improvement in the Active articles, the author describes a curriculum of ideal courses which challenge international university students in an English-speaking environment to serve the community as an integrated part of their coursework. These ESL students would tutor children in a YMCA afterschool program, raise money to prevent local homelessness, and record oral history from senior citizens, all while reinforcing the language objectives met in the classroom.

http://rosesinconcrete.org/ Roses In Concrete Our short-term goal is to start a K-12 school-center in Oakland that embodies the principles and practices described above. The school will function as the center within the neighborhoods surrounding it and provide wrap-around services in education, health, housing, and job training. The long-term goal is to create a model for urban education that prioritizes the needs of youth and families as the pathway to building healthy and sustainable communities across the U.S. and around the world. -------------- Jeff Duncan-Andrade, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Raza Studies and Education Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of the Educational Equity Initiative at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Sustainable Cities and Schools at San Francisco State University. In addition to these duties, he continues as a high school teacher in East Oakland where for the past 18 years he has practiced and studied the use of critical pedagogy in urban schools. He currently teaches English at Mandela High School in East Oakland where he directs the East Oakland Step to College Program. Before joining the faculty at SFSU, Duncan-Andrade taught English and coached in the Oakland public schools for 10 years, and completed his doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Duncan-Andrade has lectured around the world about the elements of effective teaching in schools serving poor and working class children. He works closely with teachers, school site leaders, and school district officials nationally, and as far abroad as Brazil and New Zealand, to help them develop classroom practices and school cultures that foster self-confidence, esteem, and academic success among all students. His research interests and publications span the areas of urban schooling and curriculum change, urban teacher development and retention, critical pedagogy, and cultural and ethnic studies. He has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters on the conditions of urban education, urban teacher support and development, and effective pedagogy in urban settings that have been published in leading journals such as Harvard Educational Review and Qualitative Studies in Education. He recently completed two books, The Art of Critical Pedagogy: Possibilities for Moving from Theory to Practice in Urban Schools and What a Coach Can Teach a Teacher, with Peter Lang Publishing. These books focus on effective pedagogical strategies for urban schools. He is currently completing his third book on the core competencies of highly effective urban educators with Routledge Press.

Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Student-centered learning, also known as learner-centered education, broadly encompasses methods of teaching that shift the focus of instruction from the teacher to the student. In original usage, student-centered learning aims to develop learner autonomy and independence by putting responsibility for the learning path in the hands of students. Student-centered instruction focuses on skills and practices that enable lifelong learning and independent problem-solving. Student-centered learning theory and practice are based on the constructivist learning theory that emphasizes the learner's critical role in constructing meaning from new information and prior experience. Student-centered learning puts students' interests first, acknowledging student voice as central to the learning experience. In a student-centered learning space, students choose what they will learn, how they will learn, and how they will assess their own learning. This is in contrast to traditional education, also dubbed "teacher-centered learning", which situates the teacher as the primarily "active" role while students take a more "passive", receptive role. In a teacher-centered classroom, teachers choose what the students will learn, how the students will learn, and how the students will be assessed on their learning. In contrast, student-centered learning requires students to be active, responsible participants in their own learning and with their own pace of learning. Usage of the term "student-centered learning" may also simply refer to educational mindsets or instructional methods that recognize individual differences in learners. In this sense, student-centered learning emphasizes each student's interests, abilities, and learning styles, placing the teacher as a facilitator of learning for individuals rather than for the class as a whole. Theorists like John Dewey, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, whose collective work focused on how students learn, have informed the move to student-centered learning. Carl Rogers' ideas about the formation of the individual also contributed to student-centered learning. Rogers wrote that "the only learning which significantly influences behavior is self discovered". Maria Montessori was also a forerunner of student-centered learning, where preschool children learn through independent self-directed interaction with previously presented activities. Self-determination theory focuses on the degree to which an individual’s behavior is self-motivated and 'self-determined'. When students are given the opportunity to gauge their learning, learning becomes an incentive. Student-centered learning means inverting the traditional teacher-centered understanding of the learning process and putting students at the centre of the learning process. In the teacher-centered classroom, teachers are the primary source for knowledge. On the other hand, in student-centered classrooms, active learning is strongly encouraged. Armstrong (2012) claimed that "traditional education ignores or suppresses learner responsibility". A further distinction from a teacher-centered classroom to that of a student-centered classroom is when the teacher acts as a facilitator, as opposed to instructor. In essence, the teacher’s goal in the learning process is to guide students into making new interpretations of the learning material, thereby 'experiencing' content, reaffirming Rogers' notion that "significant learning is acquired through doing". ....

Education sciences include many topics, such as pedagogy, andragogy, curriculum, learning, and education policy, organization and leadership. Educational thought is informed by many disciplines, such as history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. Faculties, departments, degree programs, and degrees on educational sciences are often called simply Faculty of Education etc. It is likewise common, especially in North America, to say she is studying education, which is generally called studying educational science(s) nowadays and was traditionally called studying pedagogy (in English) in most European countries. For example, a cultural theory of education considers how education occurs through the totality of culture, including prisons, households, and religious institutions as well as schools. Other examples are the behaviorist theory of education that comes from educational psychology and the functionalist theory of education that comes from sociology of education. The earliest known attempts to understand education in Europe were by classical Greek philosophers and sophists, but there is also evidence of contemporary (or even preceding) discussions among Arabic, Indian, and Chinese scholars.

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journal_of_Music_Theory_Pedagogy Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Schooling the Flesh: The Body, Pedagogy, and Inequality- public lecture by Antonia Darder

40:12
March 2nd 2016 at McMaster Institute for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning, McMaster University Schooling the Flesh: The Body, Pedagogy, and Inequality Antonia Darder’s lecture will address the politics of classroom life and the relationship between the body and the social and material processes of constructing knowledge. Key principles of a ‘critical pedagogy of the body’ are elaborated through an examination of dominant ideologies, educational practices, and questions of inequality. This work is presented as necessary for decolonizing the body within educational settings, and the transformation of educational practice. The lecture draws on essays on the body in “A Dissident Voice: Essays on Culture, Pedagogy, and Power”---a collection of essays that engages a variety of political questions rooted within the contentious terrain of culture and power. ANTONIA DARDER Leavey Presidential Endowed Chair in Ethics and Moral Leadership in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University. Professor Emerita of Educational Policy, Organization, and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Dr. Antonia Darder is a distinguished international Freirian scholar. She holds the Leavey Presidential Endowed Chair of Ethics and Moral Leadership at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, and is Professor Emerita of Education Policy, Organization, and Leadership at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. Her scholarship focuses on issues of racism, political economy, social justice, and education. Her work critically engages the contributions of Paulo Freire to our understanding of inequalities in schools and society. Darder’s critical theory of biculturalism links questions of culture, power, and pedagogy to social justice concerns in education. In her scholarship on ethics and moral issues, she articulates a critical theory of leadership for social justice and community empowerment. Her work also engages issues of culture and its relationship to recent developments in neuroscience. She is the author of numerous books and articles in the field, including Culture and Power in the Classroom (20th Anniversary edition), Reinventing Paulo Freire: A Pedagogy of Love, A Dissident Voice: Essays on Culture, Pedagogy, and Power and Freire and Education. She is also co-author of After Race: Racism After Multiculturalism; and co- editor of The Critical Pedagogy Reader,Latinos and Education: A Critical Reader, and the forthcoming International Critical Pedagogy Reader.
