In the 1860s and 70s, photographer Timothy O'Sullivan created some of the best-known images in American History. After covering the U.S. Civil War, (many of his photos appear in this earlier series), O'Sullivan joined a number of expeditions organized by the federal government to help document the new frontiers in the American West. The teams were composed of soldiers, scientists, artists, and photographers, and tasked with discovering the best ways to take advantage of the region's untapped natural resources. O'Sullivan brought an amazing eye and work ethic, composing photographs that evoked the vastness of the West. He also documented the Native American population as well as the pioneers who were already altering the landscape. Above all, O'Sullivan captured -- for the first time on film -- the natural beauty of the American West in a way that would later influence Ansel Adams and thousands more photographers to come.

The following in an excerpt from a lecture given by Mallence Bart Williams in 2015 (TEDxBerlin). "One thing that keeps me puzzled, despite having studied finance and economics at the world’s best universities, the following question remains unanswered. Why is it that 5,000 units of our currency is worth one unit of your currency where we are the ones with the actual gold reserves? It’s quite evident that the aid is in fact not coming from the West to Africa but from Africa to the Western world. The Western world depends on Africa in every possible way since alternative resources are scarce out here. So how does the West ensure that the free aid keeps coming? By systematically destabilizing the wealthiest African nations and their systems, and all that backed by huge PR campaigns -- leaving the entire world under the impression that Africa is poor and dying and merely surviving on the mercy of the West. Well done Oxfam, UNICEF, Red Cross, Live Aid, and all the other organizations that continuously run multi-million-dollar advertisement campaigns depicting charity porn to sustain that image of Africa globally. Ad campaigns paid for by innocent people under the impression to help, with their donations. While one hand gives under the flashing lights of cameras, the other takes in the shadows. We all know the dollar is worthless, while the Euro is merely charged with German intellect and technology and maybe some Italian pasta. How can one expect donations from nations that have so little? How super sweet of you to come with your colored paper in exchange for our gold and diamonds. But instead you should come empty-handed, filled with integrity and honor. I want to share with you our wealth and invite you to share with us. The perception is that a healthy and striving Africa would not disperse its resources as freely and cheaply, which is logical. Of course, it would instead sell its resources at world market prices, which in turn would destabilize and weaken Western economies established on the post-colonial free-meal system. Last year the IMF reports that six out of 10 of the world's fastest-growing economies are in Africa, measured by their GDP growth. The French Treasury, for example, is receiving about 500 billion dollars year in year out, in foreign exchange reserves from African countries based on Colonial Debt they force them to pay. Former French President Jacques Chirac stated in an interview recently that we have to be honest and acknowledge that a big part of the money in our banks comes precisely from the exploitation of the African continent. In 2008 he stated that without Africa, France will slide down in the rank of a third-world power. This is what happens in the human world. The world we have created. Have you ever wondered how things work in nature? One would assume that in evolution, the fittest survives. However in nature any species that is overhunting, over-exploiting the resources they depend on as nourishment, natural selection would sooner or later take the predator out, because it upsets the balance." First of all, woah. Second of all, you go straight to the federal court system. You start out in district courts, aka the general trial courts. There are 94 districts in the country. Some states, like my home state of Kansas, have just one district. Other states, like Texas, have four. Even some of the United States territories get district courts. Ah, that’s nice. Each district court has at least one judge, appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. They can serve for life...unless they misbehave, of course. One of the judges in my district, a dude named Sam Crow, has been a district court judge literally my entire life. He is 93 freaking years old. But he’s joined by 10 others. I should say that Crow would be considered a youngin’ compared to this guy. Wesley Brown, who died in 2012 at the age of 104, was actively hearing cases also in the District of Kansas up until a month before he died. He was the oldest person to serve as a federal judge in American history. Anyway, at the district level, there are also subject-specific courts, you know...courts that specialize in certain areas, like taxes, claims against the federal government, and international trade. Also, each district has its own bankruptcy court. So say they find you guilty in district court. (gasp!) No worries, you can appeal to the circuit courts. Also called the U.S. courts of appeals, they mostly hear appeals from district courts in a designated area. Hey, could you please put up that map again? Uh, thank you. Yeah so I’d be appealing in District 10...no not that District 10. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Each circuit court has multiple judges, ranging from six in the First Circuit all the way to 29 in the Ninth Circuit. Again, all of them appointed by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Again, they can serve for life...unless they misbehave. Some circuit courts also deal with specific subjects, such as veterans claims and military matters. So say they find you guilty in circuit court. (gasp!) No worries, it’s not over yet! Although you might worry a bit. You can appeal again, this time to the highest court in the land, as they say, the Supreme Court of the United States, who meet in the capital, Washington, D.C.. You’ve got to petition to them. Basically, suck up to them so they’ll hear your case. The fancy phrase for this is a writ of certiorari. Unfortunately for you, less than 1% of all appeals are actually heard by the Supreme Court. It’s made up of nine justices, again nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. No surprise here...they can serve for life...unless they misbehave, but who are we kidding here, no justice has ever been kicked out of the Supreme Court.

In which John Green teaches you about America's "peculiar institution," slavery. I wouldn't really call it peculiar. I'd lean more toward horrifying and depressing institution, but nobody asked me. John will talk about what life was like for a slave in the 19th century United States, and how slaves resisted oppression, to the degree that was possible. We'll hear about cotton plantations, violent punishment of slaves, day to day slave life, and slave rebellions. Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, and Whipped Peter all make an appearance. Slavery as an institution is arguably the darkest part of America's history, and we're still dealing with its aftermath 150 years after it ended. Wet, solid, and gaseous waste streams are potential high-impact resources for the production of biogas, biofuels, bioproduct precursors, heat, and electricity. These streams are available now in both rural and urban areas without land-use change, and in many cases their utilization helps to address the unique and local challenges of their disposal. Agricultural wastes, methane and solid wastes produced from waste water treatment, and other organic and food residues all provide opportunities for generating bioenergy and bioproducts throughout the United States. Let's face it: Humans are pretty messy. Industrial processes like mining and manufacturing are important parts of keeping civilization going, but they all impact the environment. Sometimes that impact is particularly big and messy, leaving behind hazardous waste that can take years or even decades to clean up. Melting Arctic ice means new economic opportunities: trade routes in the Arctic ocean, and access to natural resources. Because of this, the Arctic nations are now moving to expand their border claims. Russia has shown that it’s the most ambitious, using a potent combination of soft power and military buildup to advance its agenda. They’ve said the Arctic is rightfully theirs. For many decades the raw-materials-exporting nations have been trying to reach development by moving away from natural resource production (or using its proceeds) in order to invest in manufacturing industry. Natural resources have been seen, since Prebisch's and Singer's "price scissors", as at a disadvantage vis-a-vis industrial products and as lacking in technological dynamism. More recently the notion of the "resource curse" has intensified these convictions. This presentation will propose a different view of the problem. It will argue that opportunities are a moving target, dependent on the diffusion of technical change, and that the information revolution has modified the global context in such a way that the markets for natural resources, as that of every other product, are now highly segmented and capable of frequent technical change, of specialized high-value niches and of creating networks of innovation up and downstream. It will discuss the various aspects in which conditions for innovation in natural resources and in the developing country contexts have changed favourably, including the competition for access to them between East and West. And it will finally touch upon the conditions for these possibilities to be realized. http://bit.ly/1ksNogn

With so much that must be done at home in the United States, why does America send so much of its resources to Israel? It’s a fair question, but according to U.S. Gen Chuck Wald, America doesn’t spend enough on Israel. Watch to understand why. Over my decades of military service, as the Deputy Commander of United States European Command and now as a security advisor, I’ve often heard people make this complaint. The truth is we don’t spend enough. We should spend more. And for purely selfish reasons. Every dollar we spend on Israel is a dollar spent, in effect, in our own defense. As a value proposition, it’s all in America’s favor. Let me explain, but before I do let me say this: I can easily defend why America supports Israel on moral grounds alone. I’ve been there on numerous occasions. It’s a good and decent country. Given the neighborhood it lives in, I find that both remarkable and admirable. But I will make this argument solely on the basis of America’s security. Our partnership with Israel is unique. Unlike most of our current treaty alliances -- say with South Korea -- our ties with Jerusalem are not premised on American troops serving as tripwires on Israel’s frontlines. This is because Israel takes care of itself. America, for good reason, remains wary of any further military engagement in the Middle East. And this only strengthens the case for giving Israel the tools it needs to defend its borders. Here are three things we can do – again, all in our own self-interest. First, the United States should front load its financial commitment to Israel. We have agreed to provide Israel $38 billion in defense assistance over ten years. That’s a big number, but it’s also a great deal – for America. In addition to giving Israel the financial wherewithal to purchase the weapons it needs, it also benefits the American economy. Under the agreement, Israel must spend these funds on U.S. products. And it’s happy to do so. Without adding a cent to the total, the United States should “front-load” this assistance to reflect the changing strategic situation in the Middle East, specifically the rising danger presented by Iran and its proxies Hezbollah and Hamas. An accelerated timetable would allow Israel to acquire critical capabilities like more F-35 air attack squadrons, more air refueling tankers and more precision munitions. It will need this hardware to defend itself and American interests against these persistent, and growing, threats. From abandoned mining towns with no more gold, to haunted places, here are 10 Mysterious Ghost towns in the US GET TO DYNAMITE TV AND SUBSCRIBE ! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJf35rv_-9uZiXjOi51t3JQ Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 5. Thurmond West Virginia Once a thriving center of Coal mining in West Virginia, Thurmond was a prosperous place of commerce and businesses along the Ohio Railway. It popped up in the 1880’s in the center of the state and consisted of popular hotels, casinos, banks, schools. It was a fairly well organized city with strict laws on drinking. In 1888 a rail station was built which allowed for tourism in the area and also to carry the coal out of the hills. The population reached a peak of 462 people 1930 but steady downfall would occur not too long after. A popular hotel was burnt to the ground which which had startled much of the population and would finally reach 0 in the year 2000. You can see the contrast between the cities built out in the west and out in the east during this time. There was much more technological advancements and the addition of coal to a city at this period of time would allow them to heat their homes. Surprisingly the city hasn’t received too many vandals and much of it’s past is preserved. 4. Salton Sea Gallons of water were sent gushing into a dry lake bed after a storm caused an irrigation canal to flood and break in the Colorado River. So the Salton Sea is basically lucky to exist in that sense. A resort town was built near this body of water, which became a popular location for boating. Many people once flocked here to soak up the sun, go jet skiing and drive fancy yachts in the booming 50’s and 60’s. Stars like the Beach Boys and Bono would encore this lake, right in the heart of California’s desert. It’s probably now the last place you’d want to go on vacation unless you enjoy putrid odors and some of those boats are left abandoned on this decaying lake.. Not all good things last forever and this place quickly turned into an ecological nightmare due to pesticides and fertilizers from nearby farms and the irrigation system. It’s seen as one of California’s biggest environmental blunders of all time It became much too polluted to sustain life even for fish. The inhabitants quickly fled once the smell of the water became unbearable. To this day, dead fish litter the once popular beaches, leaving a rotten egg like smell that would be enough to scare off any urban explorer and it’s certainly not good for tourism. The size of the lake continues to shrink even in 2017 and the smell of rotting fish will continue to get worse. 3. St Elmo Colorado Don’t forget the rockie mountains also have their fair share of gold as well. And where there was once gold, there are abandoned towns. This places is located in the Sawatch Mountains and features well-preserved wooden buildings from the 1880’s after the gold and silver mines sprung up. The town had a general store, a town hall, 5 hotels, dancing halls and saloons during it’s peak around the 1890’s the resources were mined and not much else was left, the railroad was closed so no one kept on coming here. Some residents seemed to stay until 1952 when the postal service was cut off. If you don’t mind high elevation at 9,961 feet, this might be an enjoyable place to visit and it’s our ghost town with the highest elevation on this list.. It’s also one of Colorado’s maintained ghost towns. 2. Virginia City, Nevada Virginia city grew quickly in the 1850’s and 60’s after the huge discovery of the comstock lode which was a major silver deposit in the sierra nevada mountains,. But once the silver was gone, everyone fled the city. You can actually explore one of our most mysterious ghost towns in the US on google maps. Check out the entire well preserved ghost town of Virginia City, which is also rumored to be one of the most haunted places in the US. Besides some of the modern day vehicles, this place is exactly the way it was over 100 years ago and it’s the most haunted place in Nevada. Some ghost towns are quite as accessible on google maps, and this is one of the more detailed ones we were able to find. Ignore the motorcycles and get a good feel for how historic site would have looked, when miners were sifting the the hills in search of gold. Drop into the Silver Terrace cemetery for a creepy flash from the past!

In which John Green teaches you about World War II, and some of the causes behind the war. In a lot of ways, WWII was about resources, and especially about food. The expansionist aggression of both Germany and Japan were in a lot of ways about resources. There were other reasons, to be sure, but the idea that the Axis needed more food can't be ignored. The German invasion of Western Europe has been going for over a week now, and the Neutral and Allied countries are in disarray. The Netherlands, despite putting up fierce resistance on some occasions, faces overwhelming powers while Belgium, France and the British feel the pressure from an organised and armoured assault from the Ardennes. And still, the German tanks, soldiers and aircraft are not all the Allies have to fear, as many of their losses are caused by their own command.
