#DEANZACOLLEGE Before any journey begins we must start with research. Traditional research sources had their basis in print resources such as books and periodicals. To learn more about non-traditional information sources in digital format, go to Part 4: Digital Media. (https://youtu.be/DNxcyJkva2I) The Library has tens of thousands of print books and access to over 100,000 e-books. Some are scholarly and academic titles from university presses and others are popular titles that you can find in many bookstores. If you are looking for a print book or e-book at De Anza College Library, start at the Library’s home page. Digital media is changing rapidly every year. Although there are many different types of digital content, some are more suitable for use in academic projects like presentations or papers. Let’s explore six types of digital media that are common, easy to find, and useful when doing research for academic assignments. Discover the top five library resources for online students.
Q: As a recent CPC, interested in gaining as much knowledge as possible, I would like to start building my own library of coding resources. (She wants books!) While I find the CCO Club’s videos and notes helpful, I also benefit from books that I can hold and keep in my desk. Can you recommend books/resources that you have found to be invaluable? A: Well, I’ll go first and then Jennifer can go next because I am a huge booklover. Also, I’m a tactile learner, not on visual. I’m tactile. I have to touch paper. And it’s taken me several years to be able to move over to using online resources that weren’t my book that I could make notes on and so on and so forth. I wouldn’t care about a medical dictionary, don’t waste your money. If you’re going to get a medical terminology dictionary, go pick one up at a garage sale because if you live anywhere that has nursing students, you’ll find them all day long at bookstores, free bookstores. You can get one on print. Go do that. I’m looking at my bookcase here. What I would suggest that you get and have at your disposal is [Shin-Lon’s] book that we use for our medical terminology and anatomy course. It is amazing. It is for coders. I think you can get it for $50 or $60, get an older edition if you want from Amazon. And I thought that I had a copy of it here but I guess I don’t. Sorry, I always have it at my fingertips. But it’s amazing. Just go to our website in our bookstore and you’ll see it. Another book that I would suggest that you get especially if you’re even thinking that you’re interested in risk adjustment is this particular book and I can’t tell if you see that. Let me look at my picture here. Sherry Poe wrote this for AMA, Risk Adjustment for Documentation. We’re at actually adopting for our Risk Adjustment course for the new year. It’s that good. You can get it off of Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime, you don’t have to. It’s truly a fabulous text and I’m not just saying that because I’ve met her and know her and she’s on my Facebook. It really is… you will find… I’d never talked to anybody that didn’t think that it was excellent and she is definitely a leader in the industry for risk adjustment. So those would be my two top suggestions but I would also say that if you go to Find-A-Code they have an extension off of them, they’re not manuals, they’re like study guides on steroids for all kinds of specialties. I have looked at them and touched them. They are fabulous. It’s not a Find-A-Code proper. It’s an extension of them. You go to Find-A-Code and you look at them. If you want Orthopedics, Specialty Orthopedics, anything, they’ve got a coding guidebook on it. So, I would invest in those. I invested in Interventional Radiology this year to build up my knowledge. Most stuff I got was online, though it’s cheaper when you buy online. So pick an area that you want to invest in. You want to do OB, get everything you can get your hands on OB, stuff like that. OK, I’ve talked enough. What do you, Jennifer? Coach Jennifer: All the books I have on my bookshelf are all billing. So I have a couple of different guides that I’ve used for billing. And actually most of them stem from the college courses that I’ve thought. There are some good publishers out there with good books and then you got some publishers that… I have a girlfriend who doesn't like one publisher in particular and she refuses to buy their books for her classes. But most of what I have are on billing. I mean, again, finding that particular subject that you can reference. Unfortunately, mine are turned this way so I can’t see the names right now. Coach Alicia: I think you like this one, too: Understanding Health Insurance that we used to use in our course. That was a really good one. Coach Jennifer: There are two out there that are kind of that. Actually, when I was researching for my course, I bought both on Amazon and I read them both to figure out which one I like better. But they’re both really good. Coach Alicia: One of the perks of being an educator that I learned when I started working at the college is that you get free copies to evaluate. Coach Jennifer: Contact them and get your book. Coach Alicia: I knew all of the reps and every time I go to a site, I see one and I send them an email like, “can I get a copy of this book.” My library in the college is so big I had to take them out in three big boxes. But they were mine, I personally got them. Oh, you can read that.

In August 2017, Questar III hosted teacher-librarian teams for a three-day institute to design and implement inquiry-based lessons using primary sources from the Library of Congress. At the institute, teacher-librarian teams engaged in an extensive exploration of the primary sources available on the Library of Congress website and learned and practiced strategies that allow students to analyze historical artifacts and develop historical content knowledge through inquiry-based learning experiences. Tamarac Elementary School Librarian Maureen King attended the institute and has put into practice the things she learned and now shares with us why inquiry based lessons are important.

Speaker: Barry Warsaw Resources are files that live within Python packages. Think test data files, certificates, templates, translation catalogs, and other static files you want to access from Python code. Sometimes you put these static files in a package directory within your source tree, and then locate them by importing the package and using its `__file__` attribute. But this doesn't work for zip files! You could use `pkg_resources`, an API that comes with `setuptools` and hides the differences between files on the file system and files in a zip file. This is great because you don't have to use `__file__`, but it's not so great because `pkg_resources` is a big library and can have potentially severe performance problems, even at import time. Welcome to `importlib.resources`, a new module and API in Python 3.7 that is also available as a standalone library for older versions of Python. `importlib.resources` is build on top of Python's existing import system, so it is very efficient. It also defines an abstract base class which loaders can implement to provide their own resource access. Python's built-in zipimporter uses this to provide efficient access to resources within a zip file. Third party import hooks can do the same, so resources can come from anything that is importable by Python. This talk will step through the motivations behind `importlib.resources`, the library's usage, its interfaces, and the hooks made available to third party packages. It will also talk about the minor differences between the standalone version and the version in Python 3.7's standard library. Hopefully audience members will come away with compelling reasons to port their code to this much more efficient library. Hi everybody. One of the first things I noticed when I arrived in Ottawa was how big of a francophone community there is here; how everything, from buses, to stop signs, are in both English and French, how many job ads in Ottawa require bilingual (English and French) applicants , ... and so, how important it is to be able to speak, read, write and understand French (in addition to English) in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Since I don't remember much from my French classes in high school, I decided to go to the Ottawa Public Library branch closest to me, on a mission to find as many resources as I could in French (and in particular, Quebec French). On this video I show you the books and dvd I found at the Ottawa Public Library about learning Canadian/Quebec French.
